Meaning · English

Weariness is a robber in the body. Its coming-forth is from not knowing. If it is plundered away by the upsurge of that awareness, how could it be without a cause?

Three words carry the teaching. Glani is weariness, the sinking, drained feeling. Vilunthika is a plunderer, one who strips a traveller on the road. Ajnana is not-knowing, ignorance: a failure to recognise what one is. Unmesha is the opening of the eye, the upsurge of awareness. The karika says weariness robs the body of what it has. It does not come from nowhere. It flows out of ignorance, the forgetting of one's own nature. Then comes the argument. Suppose the upsurge of awareness dissolves the weariness. Then the weariness was never causeless. Something that vanishes when knowing arrives must have rested on not-knowing. A cause that can be removed shows that there was a cause. This is why it is taught here. The nearby verses speak of a weak or hungry person acting with strength once the awakened power takes hold. That raises a question: where did the exhaustion go, and where did it come from? The karika answers that it was borrowed from ignorance and dissolves with the awakening. The commentators read the weariness as a symptom of that forgetting, not as a flaw in the body itself. The listener is asked to treat the sinking feeling as something with a source that can be examined, not as a fixed fact.

A man walks home at dusk certain that his pocket was picked, dragging his feet, shoulders low. At the door he finds the wallet in his other coat. His step lightens at once. The loss was never real, only his not-knowing. Weariness works like that: it feels like a theft, but it was held up by a mistake.

1. Once today, when tiredness comes in the afternoon, stop for one minute and sit still. 2. Ask quietly, "Where exactly is this weariness, and what am I believing just now?" Notice whether it is in the limbs or in the thought "I cannot go on." 3. Turn your attention to the one who is noticing the tiredness. Stay there for a few breaths. 4. Then resume the next task and note whether the tiredness feels the same, lighter or heavier. Do not force a result.

A mother lies down at four in the afternoon, saying she has nothing left. Then the phone rings: her daughter has been chosen for the school play. She is up, laughing, finding her shoes. Nothing was eaten or rested in that minute, yet the heaviness lifted. The karika reads such moments as a clue. Weariness has a source, and when awareness turns toward something, the source can loosen. Followed step by step, the scene goes like this. First, the tiredness is noticed instead of obeyed. Second, the mind asks what it is actually holding: dread of the evening, a belief that there is too much to do. Third, attention moves from that story to the plain fact of the present moment, and the load often shifts. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness often eases when interest wakes. The limit is clear. The verse does not say all fatigue is only a mistaken belief. Long-lasting exhaustion, or tiredness with other symptoms, needs a doctor, and rest, food and sleep remain real needs of the body. What the verse offers is a way of looking, not a replacement for care.
