Draupadi in the Assembly

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva 66

The story · English

Duryodhana, filled with pride, commanded Pratikamin to bring Draupadi to the assembly. He told the messenger that the sons of Pandu were no longer a threat and that only Vidura spoke in fear. Pratikamin, a man of the Suta caste, entered the home of the Pandavas like a dog entering a lion's den. He told Draupadi that Yudhishthira had become intoxicated with the dice game and had lost her to Duryodhana. Pratikamin informed her that she was now to come to the abode of Dhritarashtra to perform menial work. Draupadi questioned him, asking what prince would ever stake his own wife. She said the king must have been intoxicated with dice; otherwise he would have found some other object to stake.

Pratikamin explained that Yudhishthira had first staked his brothers, then himself, and finally Draupadi. Draupadi told the Suta to return to the assembly and ask the gambler whether he had lost himself first or her first. She insisted that he must ascertain this fact before he could take her. Pratikamin returned to the assembly and posed the question to Yudhishthira. However, Yudhishthira sat there like one who had lost his reason, offering no answer. Duryodhana then declared that Draupadi should come to the assembly herself to put her question, so that everyone could hear the exchange between her and Yudhishthira. The messenger returned to the palace to summon the princess once again.

Pratikamin told Draupadi that the assembly summoned her and warned that the end of the Kauravas was near because of Duryodhana's actions. Draupadi reflected that happiness and misery visit both the wise and the unwise, but morality is the highest object in the world. She asked the messenger to tell the assembly that she would do whatever the virtuous and elderly persons conversant with morality directed her to do. When the Suta repeated this in the assembly, the members sat with their faces down, saying nothing, for they knew Duryodhana's resolve. Yudhishthira sent a trusted messenger to tell Draupadi to come before her father-in-law weeping bitterly, despite her being in her season and wearing only one piece of cloth.

Duryodhana grew impatient with Pratikamin's hesitation and fear of Vrikodara. He commanded his brother Duhsasana to go and forcibly bring the daughter of Yajnasena, noting that their enemies were now dependent on their will. Duhsasana entered the abode of the Pandavas with blood-red eyes, telling Draupadi that she had been won and must accept the Kurus as her lords. In great affliction, Draupadi ran toward the ladies of Dhritarashtra's household. Duhsasana chased her and seized her by her long, blue, wavy locks. These locks had been sanctified during the Rajasuya sacrifice, but Duhsasana dragged her by the hair into the assembly, making her tremble like a banana plant in a storm.

Duhsasana ignored Draupadi's piteous prayers to Krishna and Vishnu. He told her that regardless of her season or her attire, she was now a slave and would live among the serving-women. With her hair dishevelled and her clothes loosened, Draupadi spoke to the assembly. She noted that there were men present equal to Indra and scholars of every branch of learning, yet she was being uncovered before them. She argued that morality is subtle and that she would not admit even an atom of fault in her lord Yudhishthira, but the act of dragging her before the Kuru heroes was unworthy. She lamented that the virtue of the Bharatas had disappeared, as Bhishma and Drona looked on in silence at this crime.

Draupadi looked at the Pandavas with a glance of modesty and anger, which distressed them more than the loss of their kingdom. Duhsasana laughed and called her a slave; Karna laughed aloud in approval, and Sakuni applauded Duhsasana. Bhishma spoke, stating that morality is subtle. He noted that while a man without wealth cannot stake the wealth of others, wives are always at the disposal of their lords. Since Yudhishthira had said he was won and did not claim Sakuni cheated, Bhishma felt unable to decide. Draupadi countered that Yudhishthira was not skilled at dice and was manipulated by deceitful gamblers, asking the other Kurus to duly decide the point she had put.

Seeing Draupadi's condition, Bhima was consumed by wrath. He told Yudhishthira that while he accepted the loss of wealth and kingdom because Yudhishthira was his lord, staking Draupadi was improper. He threatened to burn his elder brother's hands and asked Sahadeva to bring fire. Arjuna intervened, urging Bhima to practice the highest morality and not transgress his eldest brother, noting that Yudhishthira had played according to Kshatriya usage. Bhima replied that had he not known the king acted according to usage, he would have already burnt the king's hands. Then, Vikarna, the son of Dhritarashtra, stood up to challenge the silence of the elders.

Vikarna appealed to the kings, Bhishma, Dhritarashtra, and Vidura to answer Draupadi's question, warning that they would all go to hell if they remained silent. When no one answered, Vikarna declared that gambling is a vice, and people do not regard the acts of a man caught up in a vice as having authority. He argued that since Yudhishthira had lost himself first before staking Draupadi, and since she is the common wife of all five Pandavas, she was not justly won. The assembly broke into an uproar, applauding Vikarna and censuring Sakuni. Karna angrily dismissed Vikarna as a boy who did not understand morality. Karna argued that since Draupadi has many husbands, she is unchaste, and therefore uncovering her is not surprising. He ordered Duhsasana to strip her clothes.

As Duhsasana began to drag off her attire, Draupadi cried out to Govinda and Krishna of Dwaraka to rescue her from the Kaurava ocean. Moved by her distress, Krishna arrived, and the unseen Dharma covered her with endless robes of many hues. As one garment was pulled away, another appeared, until a mountain of cloth gathered around her. The assembly applauded Draupadi and censured Duhsasana. Bhima then swore a terrible oath, vowing that he would tear open the breast of Duhsasana and drink his life-blood in battle, or else he would not reach the region of his ancestors. Exhausted and ashamed, Duhsasana finally sat down.

Vidura silenced the crowd and told the story of Prahlada and Virochana: whoever knows the truth but stays silent in an assembly incurs sin. He urged the kings to answer Draupadi's question. Karna ignored him and told Duhsasana to take her to the inner apartments. Dragged away, Draupadi fell to the ground and lamented that she, whom even the sun and the wind had never seen, was now exposed to the crowd. Bhishma said the race's destruction was near but deferred the answer to Yudhishthira. Duryodhana challenged her husbands to declare that Yudhishthira was not their lord. Bhima replied that if Yudhishthira regarded himself as won, they too had all been won; the ties of virtue, reverence for their eldest brother and Arjuna's repeated urging to stay silent kept him from slaying the sons of Dhritarashtra like a lion slaying small animals. Bhishma, Drona and Vidura said, 'Forbear, O Bhima.'
