The Second Game and the Exile

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva 74

The story · English

Dhritarashtra sent a royal messenger to find Yudhishthira, who had already traveled a great distance. The messenger delivered the old king's command, telling Yudhishthira that the assembly was ready and that he must return to cast the dice. Yudhishthira reflected that the fruits of one's life are determined by the Creator and are inevitable regardless of whether he played or not. He knew that returning would lead to his own destruction, but he believed he could not refuse the command of his father-like uncle. He decided to retrace his steps and return to the gambling hall, despite the knowledge that he was walking back into a trap.

Yudhishthira and his brothers returned to the assembly, their presence weighing heavily on the hearts of their friends. They sat down to gamble once more, driven by a fate that seemed determined to destroy them. Sakuni addressed Yudhishthira, noting that the old king had already returned their lost wealth. However, Sakuni proposed a new stake of far greater value. He suggested that the loser of this game must dress in deer skins and live in the forest for twelve years. The thirteenth year would be spent in a populated region in disguise. If they were discovered during that final year, they would be exiled for another twelve years.

Sakuni added that at the end of the thirteenth year, the winner would return the kingdom to the other. The members of the assembly were filled with anxiety and raised their arms in distress. They wondered why the friends of Duryodhana did not warn him of the danger he was courting with such a bet. They felt it was their duty to tell Dhritarashtra plainly about the risks involved. Despite these warnings and the surrounding tension, Yudhishthira sat at the dice. Driven by a sense of virtue and a desire to avoid shame, he played as if he knew the destruction of the Kurus was imminent.

Yudhishthira told Sakuni that as a king observant of the customs of his order, he could not refuse a summons to dice. Sakuni dismissed the previous stakes of cattle, horses, gold, and slaves, insisting that the only stake now be the exile into the woods. He repeated the terms of the twelve years in the forest and the thirteenth year in hiding. Yudhishthira accepted the proposal immediately. Sakuni took up the dice and cast them, declaring that he had won. The sons of Pritha were defeated once again, and they prepared for their departure from the kingdom they had just lost.

The Pandavas cast off their royal robes and dressed themselves in deer skins. As they prepared for exile, Duhsasana watched them and spoke with cruelty. He proclaimed that the absolute sovereignty of Duryodhana had finally begun and that the sons of Pandu were now plunged into everlasting hell. He mocked them for their loss of prosperity and power, claiming that those who once laughed at Duryodhana were now reduced to nothing. He told them to leave behind their celestial robes and variegated coats of mail, for they were now like sesame grains without a kernel, stripped of all value.

Duhsasana continued his insults by targeting Draupadi, the princess of Panchala. He claimed that her father, Yajnasena, had acted unfortunately by marrying her to the Pandavas, whom he now described as eunuchs. He asked Draupadi what joy she could find in husbands dressed in rags and skins in the woods. He urged her to choose a new husband from among the wealthy and self-controlled Kurus present in the assembly. He told her that waiting for the fallen sons of Pandu was a waste of labor, comparing them to hollow shells of men.

Bhima, unable to bear these insults, approached Duhsasana like a lion attacking a jackal. He rebuked him as a wicked villain who only spoke such words because he was protected by the skill of the king of Gandhara. Bhima warned Duhsasana that just as his words had pierced their hearts, Bhima would pierce his heart in battle. He vowed that he would also send those who followed Duryodhana out of greed or anger to the abode of Yama. However, because he wished to remain on the path of virtue, Bhima did not attack him in the assembly.

Duhsasana, lacking shame, danced around the Kurus and mocked Bhima by calling him a cow. Bhima responded with fury, questioning how someone who won wealth through foul means could boast. He swore that he would not attain the regions of blessedness unless he pierced open Duhsasana's breast and drank his life-blood in battle. As the Pandavas began to leave, Duryodhana joined in the mockery by mimicking Bhima's lion-like gait. Bhima warned the fool that this did not give him ascendency and that he would soon slay Duryodhana and all his followers.

Following Yudhishthira out of the court, Bhima declared his vows. He predicted that he would slay Duryodhana with his mace and place his foot on his head, while Arjuna would slay Karna and Sahadeva would slay Sakuni. Arjuna agreed, stating that the resolutions of superior men are not just words and that the truth of these vows would be seen in the fourteenth year. Bhima insisted that the earth would drink the blood of Duryodhana, Karna, Sakuni, and Duhsasana. Arjuna vowed to slay the malicious Karna and any other kings who foolishly fought against him.

Arjuna stated that his vow would remain as constant as the mountains of Himavat, unless Duryodhana returned their kingdom with proper respect in the fourteenth year. Sahadeva then spoke, telling Sakuni that he was a disgrace to the Gandhara kings. He warned that the Pandavas were like sharp arrows and that he would personally ensure Sakuni's death in battle. Finally, Nakula vowed to send the sons of Dhritarashtra to the abode of Yama for their insulting treatment of Draupadi. Having pledged themselves to these promises, the five brothers approached King Dhritarashtra before leaving.
