Arjuna and the Hunter
Mahabharata, Vana Parva 39
The story · English
After the ascetics departed, the god Hara descended upon the mountains of Himavat. He took the form of a Kirata, a mountain dweller, appearing as a golden tree with a stalwart frame like Mount Meru. He carried a powerful bow and arrows that resembled poisonous snakes. Accompanying him was Uma, disguised as a Kirata woman, along with a swarm of spirits and thousands of women in the attire of mountain folk. As they arrived, the region blazed with beauty, and a sudden, solemn stillness fell over the land. The sounds of birds, springs, and water-courses ceased entirely. As the god of gods approached Arjuna, he saw a Danava named Muka, who had taken the form of a boar to slay the prince.
Arjuna saw the boar and took up his bow, Gandiva, along with arrows like poisonous snakes. Stringing his bow, he filled the air with a loud twang and spoke to the beast, telling it that while he had done no injury, he would now send the boar to the abode of Yama. However, as Arjuna prepared to shoot, the Kirata intervened and told him to stop. The hunter claimed that he had aimed at the boar first. Arjuna ignored these words and struck the animal. Simultaneously, the Kirata let fly an arrow like flaming fire. Both shafts struck the wide, adamant body of Muka at the same instant with a sound like thunder crashing upon a mountain.
The two arrows, resembling snakes with blazing mouths, killed Muka, who reverted to his terrible Rakshasa form as he died. Arjuna looked at the golden-hued stranger and the women accompanying him. Smiling, Arjuna asked who this man was and why he wandered these solitary woods. He questioned if the man feared the forest and demanded to know why he had shot a boar that Arjuna had first aimed at. Arjuna told the mountaineer that his behavior violated the customs of the chase and that he would not escape with his life. The Kirata replied softly, telling the hero not to worry, for the woods were the proper home for those who dwell there.
The Kirata then asked Arjuna why someone so delicate and brought up in luxury, possessing the splendour of fire, was dwelling alone in such a difficult and solitary region. Arjuna replied that he lived in the forest like a second Pavaki, the son of Agni, depending on his Gandiva and blazing arrows. He pointed to the slain Rakshasa as proof of his power. The Kirata countered, claiming that it was his own shot that had first struck the monster and sent it to the regions of Yama. He told Arjuna that it was arrogant to blame others for his own faults and warned the prince that he would not escape with his life.
The Kirata challenged Arjuna to strive and shoot his arrows to the best of his power. Enraged, Arjuna attacked him with a shower of arrows. To Arjuna's surprise, the Kirata received every shaft with a glad heart, urging the prince to shoot arrows capable of piercing his very vitals. The conflict intensified as both warriors shot arrows like poisonous snakes at one another. However, the wielder of the Pinaka stood unwounded and immovable as a hill. Arjuna wondered at this, questioning if this mountaineer was actually Rudra, a god, a Yaksha, or an Asura, for only the god who wields the Pinaka could withstand such a barrage.
Resolving to send the stranger to the regions of Yama if he were anyone but Rudra, Arjuna shot hundreds of arrows that shone like the rays of the sun. The Creator of the worlds bore them with a smile, as if he were a mountain bearing a shower of rocks. Eventually, Arjuna's arrows were exhausted. Alarmed, he remembered the inexhaustible quivers given to him by the god Agni during the burning of the Khandava, but found himself empty. Deciding to kill the stranger with the end of his bow as one kills an elephant with a lance, Arjuna dragged the Kirata with his bow-string and struck him with blows that descended like thunderbolts. In response, the mountaineer reached out and snatched the celestial bow from Arjuna's hands.
Without his bow, Arjuna drew his sword and rushed at his foe. He struck the Kirata's head with the full might of his arm, using a weapon that could cut through solid rock, but the sword broke into pieces upon touching the Kirata's crown. Arjuna then began throwing trees and stones, which the huge-bodied god bore with patience. Smoking with wrath, Arjuna struck the invincible god with his clenched fists. The god returned the blows with a force resembling the thunderbolts of Indra. The sound of their blows was frightful, and the fight resembled the ancient conflict between Vritra and Vasava.
The two warriors clasped each other and pressed their breasts together with immense force. The pressure was so great that their bodies began to emit smoke like charcoal in a fire. The great god then struck the already smitten Arjuna with his full might, depriving him of his senses. Bruised and mangled, Arjuna was reduced to a ball of flesh, breathless and falling to the earth as if dead. When he regained consciousness and rose from the ground covered in blood, he was filled with grief. He mentally prostrated himself before the god of gods and fashioned a clay image of the deity to worship with floral garlands.
Arjuna noticed that the garland he had offered to the clay image was suddenly decking the crown of the Kirata. Filled with joy, he prostrated himself at the feet of Bhava. Hara, seeing Arjuna's emaciated body and his ascetic austerities, spoke in a voice deep as roaring clouds. He praised Arjuna, stating that no Kshatriya equaled him in courage and patience, and that his prowess was almost equal to his own. He granted Arjuna the ability to see him in his true form. Arjuna then beheld Mahadeva and Uma in their blazing splendour and bowed before the lord of the three worlds.
Arjuna begged for pardon for his rashness and ignorance during the combat. Mahadeva smiled and revealed that Arjuna had been Nara in a former life, the friend of Narayana, and had performed great austerities. He said the Gandiva was Arjuna's own bow, snatched by his illusion, and restored the inexhaustible quivers, promising Arjuna a body free from disease. Arjuna asked for the celestial weapon called Brahmasira to ensure victory against Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Karna. Mahadeva gave him his favourite weapon, the Pasupata, and imparted its knowledge to him. As Arjuna accepted it, the earth trembled and the gods beheld the weapon by his side. Finally, bidding Arjuna go to heaven, Mahadeva gave him the Gandiva and ascended with Uma into the skies.
