Nala and Damayanti
Mahabharata, Vana Parva 57
The story · English
Vrihadaswa told the story of King Bhima, who summoned the great lords of the earth to a Swayamvara for his daughter, Damayanti. The kings arrived like mighty lions entering the mountain wilds, filling a grand amphitheatre decorated with golden pillars. These monarchs were robust and graceful, their countenances shining like stars. When Damayanti entered the hall, her dazzling light captured the hearts of every prince. The men were frozen, their glances rivetted to her. As the names of the monarchs were proclaimed, Damayanti looked upon the assembly and saw five men who were identical in every way. She could not tell which of them was King Nala of the Nishadhas, and grief filled her heart because she could not distinguish her chosen one from the others.
Damayanti reflected on the signs of the gods that she had heard about from the elders, but she saw that none of the men present possessed those divine attributes. Desperate and trembling, she folded her hands and prayed to the gods. She told them that since she had chosen the king of the Nishadhas in her heart after hearing the words of the swans, she begged the gods to reveal him to her for the sake of truth. She prayed that the guardians of the world would assume their own proper forms so that she might identify the righteous king. Hearing her piteous words and recognizing the purity of her heart and her fervent love for Nala, the gods granted her request and revealed their true natures.
The divine beings appeared as they were, with eyes that never winked, garlands that never faded, and bodies that did not sweat or touch the ground. In contrast, Nala was revealed as a mortal. His shadow gave him away, for unlike the gods he cast one, and he was stained with dust and sweat, his garlands fading and his eyes blinking. Discerning the truth, Damayanti chose Nala. Bashfully, she caught the hem of his garment and placed a beautiful floral wreath around his neck. While the other mortal kings broke out in cries of disappointment, the gods and the great Rishis applauded the choice. Nala, filled with gladness, told Damayanti that since she had chosen a mortal over the celestials, he would remain her obedient husband for as long as he lived.
Damayanti paid homage to Nala with similar words of devotion. Together, the happy pair sought the protection of Agni and the other gods. The Lokapalas, pleased by the union, bestowed eight boons upon Nala. Indra gave him the ability to see his godship during sacrifices and promised him blessed regions hereafter. Agni promised to be present whenever Nala wished and gave him bright regions. Yama granted him a subtle taste in food and pre-eminence in virtue, while the lord of waters gave him his own presence and garlands of celestial fragrance. After these gifts were given, the gods returned to heaven and the other kings departed, leaving Bhima to celebrate the wedding of Nala and Damayanti with great joy.
Following the wedding, Nala stayed with Bhima for a time before returning to his own city. He lived in joy with Damayanti, ruling his subjects righteously and giving them great satisfaction. Like the great king Yayati, Nala performed the horse sacrifice and many other rituals, offering abundant gifts to the Brahmanas. Like a very god, he spent his days sporting with Damayanti in romantic woods and groves. In time, the king and his wife had two children, a son and a daughter, both named Indrasena. Nala ruled over a land abounding in wealth and happiness, while his kingdom prospered under his intelligent and just leadership.
However, as the gods were returning to heaven, they encountered Dwapara and Kali. Indra asked Kali where he was going, and Kali replied that he was heading to Damayanti's Swayamvara because he desired her for his wife. Indra smiled and told him that the ceremony had already ended and that Damayanti had chosen Nala. This news filled the vile Kali with wrath. He told the gods that since Damayanti had chosen a mortal in the presence of celestials, she deserved a heavy doom. The gods defended Nala, describing him as a man of rectitude, truth, and self-control who was well-versed in the Vedas and the Puranas, warning Kali that cursing such a virtuous man would only destroy Kali himself.
The gods departed for heaven, but Kali remained consumed by anger. He told Dwapara that he could not suppress his rage and vowed to possess Nala, strip him of his kingdom, and separate him from Damayanti. He instructed Dwapara to enter the dice to assist him in this plan. Kali then travelled to the country of the Nishadhas and waited for a long time, watching for a moment of weakness. In the twelfth year, he found his opening. One day, after answering the call of nature, Nala performed his twilight prayers without first washing his feet. Through this single omission, Kali found a way into Nala's person and took possession of the king's mind and will.
Once he possessed Nala, Kali appeared before a man named Pushkara. He urged Pushkara to challenge Nala to a game of dice, promising that with his assistance, Pushkara would surely win. He told Pushkara that he could defeat Nala and acquire the kingdom of the Nishadhas for himself. Exhorted by Kali, Pushkara went to Nala. Dwapara also joined the scheme, transforming himself into the principal die called Vrisha. Pushkara approached the warlike Nala and repeatedly challenged him to play. Challenged in the presence of Damayanti, the lofty-minded king could not decline for long, and he eventually fixed a time for the game to begin.
At the appointed time the game began. Possessed by Kali, Nala began to lose everything. He staked and lost his gold, his silver, his robes, and his cars with their teams of horses. Nala became maddened by the dice, and none of his friends could succeed in dissuading him from continuing the play. As the disaster unfolded, the citizens of the city and the chief councillors gathered at the gate. They could not bear to see their king, who knew virtue and statecraft, fall into such a state of distress. The charioteer went to Damayanti and told her that the people were waiting at the gate, desperate to stop the calamity befalling their king.
Overwhelmed with grief and almost losing her reason, Damayanti spoke to Nala in choked accents. She told him that the citizens and councillors, urged by loyalty, were at the gate desiring to see him and that he should grant them an interview. But Nala, completely possessed by Kali, did not utter a single word in reply to his queen's lamentations. The councillors and citizens, filled with shame and grief, eventually returned to their homes, saying, 'He lives not.' For many months, Nala and Pushkara continued to gamble, and the virtuous Nala was always worsted.
