Durvasa and the Vessel

Mahabharata, Vana Parva 261

The story · English

One day, the sage Durvasa arrived in the forest with ten thousand disciples. He had timed his visit for when the Pandavas were resting and Draupadi had already finished her meal. King Yudhishthira welcomed the guest with respect, joining his palms and showing the Rishis a proper place to sit. Yudhishthira asked the sage to return quickly after performing his daily ablutions and religious observances. Durvasa, however, was skeptical. He did not know how the king would be able to provide a feast for such a large number of people. Despite his doubts, the Muni and his disciples of subdued passions proceeded to the nearby stream to wash and pray, leaving the Pandavas to prepare for their arrival.

Draupadi became deeply anxious when she realized there was no food available to feed the ten thousand guests. In her distress, she prayed inwardly to Krishna, the son of Devaki and the lord of the Universe. She called upon him as the savior of the afflicted and the supreme light, reminding him of how he had protected her from Dussasana in the past. She pleaded with the dark-complexioned god, who wears yellow robes and the Kaustubha gem, to rescue her from this current difficulty. Krishna, hearing her prayer, immediately left the side of his sleeping wife, Rukmini, and appeared before Draupadi to help her in her hour of need.

Draupadi bowed to Krishna in joy and explained the arrival of the Munis. Krishna replied that he was very hungry and asked her to give him some food without delay before he helped her. Draupadi was confused, as she had no food. She told him that the vessel given to her by the sun remains full only until she finishes her own meal, and since she had already eaten, the vessel was now empty. Krishna told her that this was no time for jest and insisted that she fetch the vessel immediately. When Draupadi brought the vessel to him, Krishna looked inside and saw a single particle of rice and vegetable sticking to the rim.

Krishna swallowed the tiny particle of food and said that may the god Hari, the soul of the Universe, be satiated with this. Once he had eaten this morsel, he told Bhimasena to go and invite the Munis to dinner. Bhimasena hurried to the transparent, cool waters of the stream where Durvasa and his disciples were bathing. As the ascetics plunged into the river and rubbed their bodies, they suddenly realized something strange. Their stomachs felt completely full, as if they had already eaten a massive feast. They stared at one another in confusion, wondering how they could possibly eat the meal that Yudhishthira was preparing for them.

Durvasa realized the predicament. He told his disciples that by spoiling the repast, they had done a great wrong to King Yudhishthira. He feared the wrath of the Pandavas, knowing they were religious, learned, and devoted to Vasudeva. Durvasa warned that if provoked, the Pandavas could consume them with anger like fire consumes cotton. He ordered his disciples to flee quickly before the Pandavas saw them. The Brahmanas, terrified by the preceptor's warning, ran away in all directions. Bhimasena searched the landing places of the river but found no one. He returned to Yudhishthira and reported that the Munis had disappeared.

The Pandavas waited in anxiety, fearing the Rishis might return in the dead of night to deceive them. As they sighed in distress, Krishna appeared once more. He explained that he had come because Draupadi implored him, but that they no longer had anything to fear from Durvasa, as the Rishi had fled out of fear of their own ascetic powers. He noted that virtuous men never suffer and asked for permission to return home. The Pandavas and Draupadi thanked him, comparing his help to a boat saving them from a wide ocean. Krishna departed for his capital, and the Pandavas continued their days in the forest, their difficulties frustrated.
