Jayadratha Carries Off Draupadi
Mahabharata, Vana Parva 269
The story · English
The king of Sindhu commanded his princes to march and strike. When the soldiers saw Yudhishthira and his brothers, they let out a loud shout. However, the warriors of the Sivi, Sauvira, and Sindhu tribes lost heart when they saw the Pandavas looking like fierce tigers. Bhima, armed with a gold-embossed mace of Saikya iron, rushed toward the doomed Saindhava monarch. A prince named Kotikakhya intervened, surrounding Bhima with charioteers to separate the combatants. Despite being assailed by countless spears, clubs, and iron arrows, Bhima did not waver. With his mace, he killed an elephant, its driver, and fourteen foot-soldiers fighting in front of Jayadratha's chariot.
Arjuna sought to capture the Sauvira king and slew five hundred mountaineers in the van of the Sindhu army. In the same clash, Yudhishthira himself killed a hundred of the best Sauvira warriors in the blink of an eye. Nakula jumped from his chariot and used his sword to scatter the heads of those fighting in the rear, like a tiller sowing seeds. Sahadeva used iron shafts to fell warriors on elephants, who dropped like birds from tree boughs. The king of Trigartas descended from his chariot and killed Yudhishthira's four steeds with a mace. Seeing the foe come so near on foot, Yudhishthira pierced the Trigarta king's breast with a crescent-shaped arrow, and the man fell like an uprooted tree.
Yudhishthira mounted Sahadeva's chariot after his own steeds were slain. Two warriors, Kshemankara and Mahamuksha, attacked Nakula with a shower of arrows, but Nakula slew them both with two long shafts. Suratha, the king of Trigartas, then used an elephant to drag Nakula's chariot. Nakula leaped out and stood firm with shield and sword. When Suratha urged the infuriated elephant toward him, Nakula severed the beast's trunk and tusks. The elephant fell, crushing its riders. While Nakula rested on Bhima's car, Bhima killed Kotikakhya's charioteer with a horse-shoe arrow. Without a driver, the prince's horses ran wild, and Bhima slew Kotikakhya with a bearded dart.
Arjuna used crescent-shaped arrows to cut off the heads and bows of twelve Sauvira heroes. He killed the leaders of the Ikshwakus, Sivis, Trigartas, and Saindhavas. The field was covered in elephants and chariots, and heads lay scattered without trunks. Dogs, ravens, and vultures feasted on the dead. Jayadratha, seeing his army destroyed, became terrified. He left Draupadi behind and fled through the forest path by which he had come. Yudhishthira saw Draupadi and Dhaumya and had Sahadeva take her up in a chariot. Bhima began killing the fleeing followers, but Arjuna told him to stop and focus on capturing Jayadratha first.
Bhima told Yudhishthira to return home with Draupadi, the twins, and Dhaumya to console the princess. He vowed he would not leave the foolish king of Sindhu alone even if he hid in the internal regions. Yudhishthira, remembering their sister Dussala and Queen Gandhari, asked Bhima not to kill Jayadratha despite his wickedness. This sparked indignation in Draupadi. She told her husbands that a man who forcibly carries away a wife or wrests a kingdom should never be forgiven, even if he begs for mercy. Admonished by her, Bhima and Arjuna went in search of the chief. Yudhishthira returned to the hermitage, where Markandeya and other Brahmanas were bewailing Draupadi's misfortune.
Bhima and Arjuna pursued Jayadratha, who was two miles ahead. Arjuna performed a wonderful feat, using mantra-inspired arrows to kill Jayadratha's horse from a distance. The terrified king was left alone and perplexed. Arjuna overtook him and asked how a man with so little manliness dared to take a lady by force, urging him to turn and face them. Jayadratha did not turn. Bhima overtook him, seized him by the hair, and slammed him into the ground. Bhima kicked him in the head and pressed his knees and fists into the prince's breast until Jayadratha became insensible. Arjuna reminded Bhima of Yudhishthira's words regarding Dussala to stop the beating.
Bhima complained that Yudhishthira was too merciful and Arjuna too focused on virtue. He then used a crescent-shaped arrow to shave Jayadratha's head, leaving only five tufts of hair. Bhima told the trembling prince that he could live only if he declared himself a slave of the Pandavas in public assemblies. Jayadratha agreed. The brothers chained him and brought him before Yudhishthira. The king smiled and told them to set the prince free. Bhima asked the king to tell Draupadi that Jayadratha was now the Pandavas' slave, but Yudhishthira affectionately asked him, if he had any regard for them, to set the wretch free. Draupadi too said to let him go, since he was now the king's slave and had already been disfigured.
Yudhishthira told Jayadratha he was a free man and warned him never to attempt such a violent act again. He told him to depart in peace with his remaining forces. Overpowered with shame, Jayadratha went to where the Ganga meets the plains and performed severe penance to the three-eyed god, Shiva. Pleased, Shiva appeared and granted him a boon. Jayadratha asked to be able to defeat all five Pandavas in battle. Shiva told him this was impossible, as none could conquer the Pandavas. However, he said Jayadratha could check four of them for a single day, but never Arjuna, who was protected by the god Narayana.
Shiva explained that Arjuna was the incarnation of Nara and the friend of Narayana, the Supreme Being. He described how Narayana, after the universe was consumed by fire and flooded by water, slept on the serpent Sesha. When he awoke, Brahma was created from his navel to rebuild the world. Shiva detailed Vishnu's incarnations, including the wild boar that lifted the Earth from the flood, the half-man half-lion Narasimha who slew Hiranya-Kasipu, and the dwarf Vamana who measured the world in three paces. He explained that Vishnu had now been born as Krishna to preserve religion, and because Krishna protected Arjuna, Arjuna remained invincible.
After Shiva and his followers vanished, Jayadratha returned home and the Pandavas remained in the Kamyaka forest. Yudhishthira sat with Markandeya and expressed his deep doubt. He asked how a virtuous woman like Draupadi, born of a sacrificial altar, could suffer such a misfortune. He felt that destiny was irresistible. He lamented that despite their victory and the rescue of his wife, the disgrace of the ravishment stained them. He mourned their life in the wilderness, where they survived by hunting and suffered due to the deceit of kinsmen, questioning if any man had ever been more unfortunate than he.
