Savitri and Satyavan

The story · English

The sage Markandeya tells the story of Savitri, the daughter of King Aswapati of the Madras. One day, while the king was speaking with the celestial sage Narada in his court, Savitri returned from her travels to sacred regions. Narada asked the king why he had not yet found a husband for his daughter. Aswapati explained that Savitri had been sent to search for a husband herself. He asked his daughter to relate her choice in detail. Savitri told them of a virtuous Kshatriya king named Dyumatsena who had become blind. An enemy had taken advantage of this misfortune and stolen his kingdom, forcing the blind king, his wife, and their young son to live as ascetics in the forest. Savitri declared that she had chosen this son to be her husband.

Hearing this, Narada warned the king that Savitri had made a grave mistake. He explained that while the youth, Satyavan, was possessed of every virtue, he had one defect that overwhelmed all others. Narada revealed that within a year, Satyavan would cast off his body and die. Aswapati urged his daughter to choose another husband, as the days of this youth were numbered. Savitri refused, stating that death falls only once and a daughter is given away only once. She had settled the matter in her mind and would not waver. Narada, impressed by her resolve and the virtues of Satyavan, approved of the match. Aswapati accepted Narada's advice and began making preparations for the wedding, summoning the Brahmanas and priests to accompany them.

The king and his daughter traveled to the sacred forest and found the blind Dyumatsena sitting under a Sala tree. Aswapati introduced Savitri and asked the royal sage to accept her as a daughter-in-law. Dyumatsena hesitated, wondering how a princess could bear the hardships of a forest life. Aswapati replied that happiness and misery come and go, and he had come out of love and friendship. He urged the blind king not to destroy his hope. Dyumatsena, who had long desired an alliance with Aswapati but hesitated due to his loss of kingdom, welcomed the union. The wedding was performed with due rites. Aswapati returned home in joy, while Savitri and Satyavan found great happiness in each other.

Savitri adapted to her new life by putting away her ornaments and dressing in barks and red cloths. She served her mother-in-law with tenderness and worshipped her father-in-law as a god. She pleased Satyavan with her honeyed speech and love. Despite the peace of the forest, the words of Narada remained in Savitri's mind night and day. As the appointed hour of Satyavan's death approached, she counted the days. When she realized her husband would die in four days, she began the Triratra vow, fasting day and night. Dyumatsena expressed concern that the fast was too hard, but Savitri insisted that her perseverance would see her through. She grew lean like a wooden doll as the final day arrived.

On the morning of the destined day, Savitri performed her rites and offered oblations to the fire. The ascetics of the hermitage blessed her, praying that she would never suffer widowhood. When Satyavan prepared to go into the woods to gather fruit, Savitri insisted on accompanying him, saying she could not bear to be separated from him. Satyavan was concerned about her weakness from fasting and the difficulty of the forest paths, but he eventually agreed. Savitri asked her parents-in-law for permission, explaining that she wished to see the blossoming woods. Dyumatsena granted her request, noting that Savitri had never asked for anything before, and told her to ensure that Satyavan's work was not neglected.

Savitri followed her husband into the woods, though her heart was racked with grief. She watched him constantly, viewing him as already dead in her mind. Satyavan pointed out the beauty of the rivers and flowers, but Savitri remained immersed in the memory of Narada's warning. After Satyavan had filled his wallet with fruits and felled some branches, the exertion caused him to develop a severe headache. He told Savitri that his head felt as if it were being pierced by numerous darts and that he needed to sleep. Savitri gently placed his head in her lap. As she waited, she suddenly saw a terrifying figure standing beside Satyavan and gazing at him, clad in red with a crown, possessing a dark hue, red eyes, and a noose in his hand.

The figure identified himself as Yama, the lord of death. He told Savitri that he spoke with her because of her devotion and merit. He explained that Satyavan's days had run out, and that he had come personally instead of sending his emissaries because Satyavan was too virtuous to be borne away by them. Yama then pulled the vital essence of Satyavan from his body, leaving the corpse unsightly and motionless. As Yama began to lead the soul south, Savitri followed him. Yama told her to go back and perform the funeral rites, saying she was freed from her obligations. Savitri replied that she would follow her husband wherever he went. She began to speak to Yama about the nature of true religious merit and the importance of knowledge over the four modes of life.

Pleased with her wisdom, Yama offered her a boon, though he explicitly stated he would not grant Satyavan his life. Savitri first asked that her father-in-law regain his eyesight and strength. Yama granted this. She then asked that Dyumatsena regain his lost kingdom and never renounce his duties. Yama granted this as well. Savitri continued to speak of the duty of the good to show mercy and love to all creatures. Yama, finding her words as refreshing as water to a thirsty soul, offered a third boon. Savitri asked that her father, Aswapati, be blessed with a hundred sons to perpetuate his line. Yama granted this and urged her to return home, but she continued to follow him.

Yama was so impressed by Savitri's discourse on righteousness and the nature of the virtuous that he offered a fourth boon. Savitri asked that she and Satyavan be blessed with a hundred sons of their own, possessing strength and prowess. Yama granted the request. Savitri spoke once more of the righteous, and Yama, his respect for her growing, asked her to name some incomparable boon, this time making no exception. Savitri then argued that the boon of children was impossible without her husband. She told Yama that without Satyavan, she did not wish for happiness, prosperity, or even heaven, and could not make up her mind to live. To make the previous boon true, she begged Yama to restore Satyavan to life. Yama said, 'So be it,' untied his noose and restored Satyavan's life and soul.

Yama blessed the couple with four hundred years of life and fame. He returned to his abode, and Savitri placed Satyavan's head in her lap. When he woke, he asked why she had not awakened him and where the dark person who had been dragging him away had gone. Savitri told him he had slept long and that Yama had departed. Satyavan recalled the pain in his head and the vision of the effulgent person, asking if it was a dream. As night fell, they discussed the danger of the forest and the anxiety of Satyavan's parents. Satyavan lamented his tardiness, fearing for his blind father's grief. Savitri comforted him and helped him walk back to the hermitage, carrying his axe for him.
