Indra Takes Karna's Armour
Mahabharata, Vana Parva 308
The story · English
Indra, the king of the celestials, came to Karna disguised as a Brahmana. Upon seeing him, Karna welcomed the visitor and offered him gifts, asking if he would like a gold necklace, beautiful damsels, or villages filled with cattle. The Brahmana replied that he did not want gold or women, suggesting that Karna give those to people who actually ask for them. Instead, he told Karna that if he was truly sincere in his vows, he should cut off the coat of mail born with his body, and his earrings too, and give them to him. The Brahmana insisted that this single gain would be superior to any other object in the world. Karna responded that he could give land and cattle, but he could not part with his mail and earrings.
Although Karna tried to pacify the Brahmana and worshipped him duly, the visitor refused to ask for any other boon. Karna smiled and explained that his mail was part of his body and his earrings were made of Amrita, which made him unslayable in all the worlds. Because of this, he could not give them away. He offered the Brahmana the entire kingdom of the earth, free of enemies and full of prosperity, warning that if he were deprived of his natural armour, he would be vulnerable and liable to be defeated by his foes. Despite these pleas and offers, the Brahmana remained firm and would not accept any other gift, continuing to demand the divine protection Karna had been born with.
Karna then smiled and addressed the visitor as the lord of the celestials. He admitted that he had recognized Indra all along and told him it was improper to grant an unprofitable boon to the lord of the celestials, the creator and lord of all beings, who should instead be the one granting boons. Karna warned Indra that if he took the armour and earrings, Karna would meet with destruction and Indra himself would be ridiculed. He proposed a trade, telling Indra that he would only hand over his protection in exchange for something of value. Indra admitted that Surya had already informed Karna of his purpose. He agreed to the trade and told Karna he could have anything he desired, except for Indra's own thunder-bolt.
Karna requested a dart that was incapable of being baffled and powerful enough to destroy whole armies in battle. Indra agreed but set a specific condition. He explained that when he used this dart against the Daityas, it killed hundreds of enemies and returned to his hand. In Karna's hand, however, the dart would slay only one powerful enemy and then return to Indra, roaring and blazing. Karna replied that he was willing to accept this, for he feared one particular enemy who was as hot as fire and roared fiercely. Indra cautioned him that the foe he sought to kill was protected by Krishna, the invincible Boar and incomprehensible Narayana, but Karna insisted on the trade regardless.
Karna asked that his body not be left unsightly or scarred after the armour was removed. Indra promised that Karna would retain the complexion and energy of his father. He added a warning that if Karna, maddened by wrath, hurled the dart while he still had other weapons and his life was not in imminent peril, the weapon would fall upon Karna himself. Karna promised to use the Vasavi dart only in extreme danger. As Karna began to peel the mail from his own flesh, the hosts of celestials, men, and Danavas let out a roar. Karna did not flinch or show pain, smiling as celestial drums played and flowers fell on him. He handed the dripping mail and the earrings to Indra, and it was for this deed that he came to be called Karna.
Having beguiled Karna, Indra smiled, thinking that the business of the sons of Pandu had already been completed, and ascended to heaven. The sons of Dhritarashtra became distressed and lost their pride when they learned of the trick, while the sons of Pritha were filled with joy. Janamejaya asked Vaisampayana where the sons of Pandu were at that time and how they heard the news. Vaisampayana explained that after defeating the chief of the Saindhavas and rescuing Draupadi, the Pandavas had completed their twelve years of exile. Having listened to the stories of gods and Rishis from Markandeya, they left their asylum in Kamyaka and returned to the sacred Dwaitavana with their followers, cattle, and chariots.
