He offers no praise, no bow, no call to the ancestors. His dwelling may move or stand still, and he lives as chance provides, a disciplined renunciant. When he has seen the truth within himself, and seen the same truth outside, he becomes that truth, finds his rest in it, and does not slip away from it.
Gaudapada describes the renunciant who is finished with ritual. Three words name what he lets fall. Stuti is praise, the hymn sung to a deity. Namaskara is the bow. Svadhakara is the call "svadha" made when offering to the ancestors. The commentators take these as the duties of someone who still lives among separate things to be honoured. Having seen that nothing stands apart, he has none left to perform. Yati comes from a root meaning to restrain: a person of settled discipline, not a drifter. Yadricchika means living by whatever comes unasked, so he plans no home and keeps no fixed place. The second half gives the reason. Tattva is "that-ness", what a thing really is. He sees it within, in his own awareness, and sees it outside, in the world. These are one truth, as the earlier verses of this book argue. So he becomes tattva-like, takes his pleasure in it, and does not fall from it. Gaudapada teaches this at the close of the dream chapter. If waking and dream are both seen inside awareness, there is no outer world left to appease or conciliate, and no separate god to flatter. The verse asks of the listener a steadiness that does not depend on props.
A child learning to swim clings to the pool's rail at first. Once the water holds her, she lets go and the rail is only a rail. The rites are the rail, and the settled seeing is the water holding her.
1. Choose one habit you perform mainly to be seen or approved, such as a greeting, a title, or a small show of politeness. Drop it for one day. 2. Notice what rises in you when it is gone, whether unease, relief or nothing. Do not act on it for five minutes. 3. In the evening, sit quietly for ten minutes and ask where you ended and the room began. Write one sentence on what you found.
A retired station master wakes on his first morning with no timetable, no uniform and no one saluting him. For thirty years the day told him who he was. Now the kettle boils and the hours are empty. The verse describes a person who needs none of those supports, and says this comes from seeing one truth inside and outside, not from stubbornness. In that morning, the first step is to notice how much of his sense of himself was held up by roles and greetings. The second is to see what remains when they are gone: breath, hunger, the light on the wall. The third is to meet the day as it comes, without drawing up a new set of duties to fill the gap. Ordinary experience confirms that when titles drop away, restlessness often appears before any calm does. The verse does not promise that this morning will feel easy, and it does not remove loneliness or loss. It speaks of a settledness that the text says comes only from the seeing, and it is no replacement for company, routine or medical care when those are needed.
