Sages who are free of craving, fear and anger, and who have crossed to the far shore of the Vedas, have seen this: it has no imagined divisions, it is the settling of the whole spread-out world, and it is not two. So, knowing it this way, fix the memory on the non-dual. Having reached the non-dual, walk through the world like one who is dull.

Three terms carry the first half. Raga is craving, literally colour, the tint desire puts on things. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mind's habit of fashioning alternatives and divisions, from kalp, to shape. Prapancopasama joins prapanca, the spread-out manifold world, with upasama, a settling, as when a stirred pot goes still. Gaudapada says the sages who have seen the non-dual were not the ones driven by craving, fear and anger. That is his point: those three keep the mind busy making divisions, so only a mind quiet of them sees what has none. What they saw is not a new object. It is the world's busy spreading-out coming to rest, and it is advaya, not two. The second half turns to the listener. Because this is so, let smriti, steady remembering, rest on the non-dual and stay there. Then comes the odd instruction to move among people like a jada, a dull or inert person. Shankara reads this as outward ordinariness: the knower does not display what he knows, and is not actually dull. The wording of settling the manifold echoes Nagarjuna's own phrase, a shared vocabulary between two different schools. Gaudapada teaches this because the verses before it say no one is bound and no one seeks. If so, what remains to ask is where the mind rests, and how one lives quietly.

A pond ruffled by wind shows a hundred broken moons, each shifting and different. When the wind drops, the water smooths and one moon lies there whole. Craving, fear and anger are the wind. The many separate things are the broken moons, and the stilled water is the mind that sees the one.

1. Pick one small irritation or worry today, such as a delayed message or a queue that moves slowly. 2. When it grips you, name which of the three is present: wanting, fear or anger. Say it silently, once. 3. Breathe out slowly three times and notice how the situation looks once the grip loosens. 4. Before sleep, spend two minutes recalling that steadier moment, and go on with the evening quietly, without announcing it to anyone.

A man is stuck in a traffic jam with forty minutes left to reach his daughter's recital. His jaw is tight, he is gripping the wheel, and every driver ahead looks like an enemy. The verse teaches that the three things stirring him, wanting, fear and anger, are what carve the scene into separate hostile pieces. First he would notice which of the three is speaking: wanting to arrive, fear of disappointing her, anger at the road. Naming it loosens it a little. Then he would let his attention rest on one steady thing, his breathing or the thought that he is simply a person in a car. The text's word for this is steady remembering. Then he would drive on plainly, without a speech or a show of calm. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: anger narrows what a person can see and weigh. The verse does not promise the jam will clear, that he will arrive in time, or that disappointment will not sting. It also does not replace help for someone whose fear or anger has grown past what they can manage alone.
