The self is imagined through things that are not real, and through the non-dual as well. Those things too are the non-dual alone, and so non-duality is auspicious. This manifold does not stand by a nature of its own, nor in any way by itself. Nothing is apart, and nothing is not apart. So the knowers of the truth know.

Four words carry it. Kalpita means imagined, from klp, to fashion or arrange: the way the mind builds a picture out of what it is given. Advaya means not-two. Shiva means auspicious, kind, bringing good. Tattvavid means one who knows 'that-ness', how things really are. Gaudapada says the self gets imagined into many shapes through things that have no standing of their own. Yet those things are nothing but the non-dual, so what is imagined and what it rests on are not two. That is why he calls non-duality kind: nothing is left to fight, fear or chase as a separate rival. The second verse goes further. The manifold has no nature of its own and does not come from itself. It is not apart from the one reality, and it is not simply the same as it either. Two easy answers are refused, and the knowers of truth hold the narrow gap between them. The commentators read this as freeing the mind from both 'many' and 'one' as fixed ideas. Nagarjuna also denied that things stand on a nature of their own, though the Karika keeps one non-dual ground that he would not name. It is taught here because 2.31 has just said there is no one bound and no one freed. The reader needs to know what is left. What is left is not a blank, but a seeing without division.

A child knots a wet handkerchief into a rabbit with ears and a nose. The rabbit looks like a separate creature, yet it is only cloth. Untie it and nothing has been lost. The shape is neither a second thing beside the cloth nor quite the same as plain cloth. So the many forms stand to the one reality.

1. Tonight, pick one person you think of with a hard label, such as 'the difficult one' or 'my rival'. 2. For three minutes, list what you plainly share: the same city, weather, tiredness, wish to be respected. 3. Notice whether the label feels as solid as it did. Do not argue with it. 4. Tomorrow, when you meet them, watch for the moment the 'apart' feeling arises. Name it silently as a picture the mind is building, and carry on.

A daughter sits at a family dinner after a fight with her sister. Across the table, the sister has become 'her side', and the daughter is already rehearsing sentences. Gaudapada's two verses would work on that moment in steps. First, the sense of two camps is seen as something the mind arranged, not something handed over finished. Second, the sister is not turned into a mere blur of 'same'. She is still herself, and the hurt still has a source. Third, the daughter notices that the walls between them were drawn from the same ground they both stand on, so the table is a little less like a border. Ordinary experience confirms that a grudge shrinks when we remember what we share. The verse does not say the quarrel was imaginary, and it does not settle who owes whom an apology. It does not remove the hurt, and it does not replace the plain conversation the sisters still need to have.
