Meaning · English
Know Om as the Lord, seated in the heart of everyone. Having understood Om as all-pervading, the steady person does not grieve. Om has no measure, and it has measureless measure. It is the quieting of duality, and it is auspicious. Whoever has known Om is a sage. No one else is.
Key words first. Ishvara is the Lord, from ish, to rule. Amatra means without measure; matra is a part or a unit of sound. Dvaita is duality, the sense of two: me and the world, knower and known. Upashama is a settling, a quieting. Muni is the sage, one who has gone silent in knowing. Now the clauses. Gaudapada tells his hearers to know Om as the Lord who dwells in every heart. Because Om pervades everything, the person who grasps this stays steady and does not grieve. Next he says Om is without measure, yet also made of unending measure. The commentators read the first as the silent fourth beyond the three sounds, and the second as the sounds themselves. Both belong to one Om. Then he calls it the quieting of duality: the sense of two settles into one. It is auspicious, shiva, meaning kind and safe. Last, he says the one who has known Om is the sage, and no one else is. Why teach it here? The earlier verses ask the mind to rest in Om and call it fearless. This one answers what that gives: grief ends where the sense of two ends. Shankara reads the sage as one whose knowing is complete, not one who merely recites. The verse asks the listener to know, not only to chant.
A pond is churned by wind and shows only broken pieces of the sky. When the wind drops, the ripples settle and one whole sky lies on the water. The pond is the mind. The broken pieces are duality. The settled sky is what the sage sees.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet spot with your hand over your chest. 2. Say Om softly three times, and let the last one fade until you can no longer hear it. 3. Stay in the silence after the sound, for a minute, and notice that it is not empty. 4. The next time a worry arrives today, recall that silence once before you answer the worry.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for news of his mother's scan. His mind runs ahead to every bad outcome, and he keeps picking at the thought of who to call. The verse offers him a different place to stand. First, he lets the sound of Om go out slowly on one long breath, which also slows the body, as any doctor would expect a long exhale to do. Second, he stays with the silence after the sound and does not follow the thoughts. Third, he turns to the text's claim that the Lord sits in the heart of everyone: his mother, the nurse at the desk, and himself. For a moment he is one among the people in the corridor, not alone against the night. Ordinary experience confirms that fear shrinks a little when the body is calmer and one is not alone. The verse does not promise the scan will be clear, and it does not take away sorrow if the news is bad. It does not replace the doctors, who are the right people to ask about his mother's care.
