Om is the lower Brahman, and Om is also remembered as the higher. It has nothing before it, nothing within it that is other than itself, nothing outside it, and nothing beyond it. Om does not decay. Om is the beginning of everything, its middle, and its end as well. One who knows Om in this way reaches That at once.
Three words carry the teaching. Pranava is a name for Om; the root sense is 'that which is sounded forth'. Apara means 'lower' or 'nearer', and para means 'higher' or 'farther'. Brahman is the one reality the Upanishads speak of, from a root meaning 'to be vast'. Gaudapada says Om is both the lower and the higher Brahman. The commentators read the lower as Brahman approached through a name and a form, and the higher as Brahman beyond all description. Om is the sound that stands for both. Then he describes it by what it lacks. Nothing comes before it, nothing sits apart from it, nothing lies outside it, nothing stands beyond it, and it does not wear away. Next he says that Om is the start, the middle and the end of all things. This does not mean the sound is long enough to hold everything. It means that what the sound points to is present at every stage. The reason he gives it here is the question that runs through his first book: how can a person take hold of the fourth, which words cannot reach? He answers that Om is something to hold, since it can be sounded and its parts can be counted. Last, he says the one who knows Om this way reaches That straight away. Shankara reads this as knowing, not as a ritual result. The text asks the listener to know Om as the whole, not as a sound among sounds.
A potter's wheel turns. The clay is clay when it is a lump, clay while it is a standing pot, and clay again in the broken pieces. The shape comes and goes, but nothing else was ever there. Om, in this teaching, is the clay of everything: the start, the middle and the end are all one thing seen at different moments.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes somewhere quiet and say the syllable aloud once, slowly, on one breath. 2. Listen to where it begins. Notice that it rises out of silence. 3. Listen to where it ends. Notice that it settles back into the same silence. 4. Repeat it five times, then sit quietly for a minute. Notice that the silence was there before, during and after the sound.
A grandmother lies awake on her first night in her son's flat in a new city. The traffic is unfamiliar, the fridge hums, and her mind keeps running back to the house she left. She decides to say the one syllable, slowly, on a long breath out. She notices it comes up out of quiet, swells, and goes back into quiet. Then she notices the room's noises have the same shape: each begins in stillness and ends in it. The verse gives her one thing to hold that has a plain beginning, middle and end, and the text teaches that what it points to is present in all three. Ordinary experience also confirms that a slow breath out settles the body. The verse does not promise sleep that night, and it does not take away homesickness or the grief of leaving a home. It is a teaching about what Om is, and it is not a treatment for insomnia or low mood. Anyone whose sleeplessness lasts for weeks should see a doctor.
