Meaning · English
Let the mind be joined to Om. Om is Brahman, free of fear. For one who stays steadily joined to Om, fear is found nowhere, at any time.
Three words carry the verse. Yunjita comes from yuj, to yoke: the mind is harnessed to Om the way an ox is tied to a plough, so it stops wandering off. Pranava is another name for Om, from a root meaning to hum or praise. Nirbhaya means without fear: nir, without, and bhaya, fear. Gaudapada says Om is Brahman, and Brahman is fearless. The first clause gives the practice: set the mind on Om. The second gives the reason: what you rest on is itself free of fear. The third says nityayukta, always joined, so the joining is steady, not an occasional visit. The fourth says that for such a person fear is not found anywhere, at any time. The reason fear ends is given earlier in the Karika: fear comes from there being a second thing to be afraid of, and Brahman has no second. Shankara reads Om here as both the sound and the Brahman it points to. Gaudapada teaches this right after saying the three sounds of Om and the three states are one, so the mind has somewhere to rest. The verse asks for steady return, not a single sitting.
A small child holds a parent's hand in a crowded station. Trains roar and strangers push past, yet the child walks calmly, because one fixed thing is held. Om is the hand held, the steady thing the mind keeps returning to; the crowd is the passing causes of fear.
1. Choose one fixed time today, such as the first two minutes after waking or while the kettle boils. 2. Sit still and say Om aloud, slowly, five times, letting the sound run out into silence each time. 3. Notice where your mind is when the sound ends, and whether any worry is quieter. 4. When a worry comes up later, say Om once, silently, and go back to what you were doing.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for a scan result on his wife. His mind runs ahead: the words the doctor might say, the empty house. His breath is shallow and his hands will not stay still. The verse offers him one small act. He fixes his attention on a single sound, Om, said slowly under his breath. The slow, long exhale that comes with a drawn-out sound is something ordinary experience confirms can settle a racing body. His attention, held on one thing, stops feeding the pictures of what might come. The text itself teaches more than calm: it says Om is Brahman, and Brahman has no fear in it, so the fearlessness belongs to what he rests on and not to his mood. The limit is plain. The verse does not change the result of the scan, does not take away grief if it comes, and does not replace the doctor or the people who can sit beside him.
