Meeting Harmful Thoughts
Yoga Sutras 2.33
Meaning · English
When harmful thoughts press on the mind, bring the opposite thought into being and dwell on it.
Three words carry this sutra. Vitarka is a harmful thought, one that turns the mind toward hurting, lying or taking. Badhana is pressing or troubling. The thought is not drifting past. It leans on the mind. Pratipaksha-bhavana is two words joined. Pratipaksha is the opposite side. Bhavana is a bringing into being, done by dwelling on something until it takes hold. The plain sense: when harmful thoughts press on the mind, Patanjali teaches setting the opposite thought against them and holding it on purpose. The thought is not fought with force. A second thought is placed beside it, and attention is given to that one. Why he says it: the sutras just before lay out restraints of conduct. A restraint is easy to name and hard to keep when the mind is pulling the other way. This sutra gives a working method for that moment. It rests on his earlier teaching that the mind takes the shape of what it repeatedly attends to. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it as a practice for the moment a harmful thought arises. The student turns toward its opposite. The later commentators follow him closely on this point.
A canoe tips toward the left, and the paddler leans right to steady it. The lean is deliberate, and it is made while the tilt is happening. The tilt is the harmful thought, and the lean is the opposite thought, set against it before the boat goes over.
1. Today, notice one moment of irritation, envy or a small untruth rising in you. Name it silently in a few words. 2. Pick its opposite in plain terms: patience for irritation, goodwill for envy, the plain fact for an untruth. 3. Hold that opposite in mind for one minute, sitting or standing, repeating it slowly. 4. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling which thought pressed hardest today and which opposite you used.
