Meaning · English
Harmful acts such as violence may be done, caused, or approved. They may spring from greed, anger, or confusion, and be slight, middling, or extreme. Their fruit is endless suffering and ignorance. So the opposite thought is to be cultivated.
Three terms carry the sutra. Vitarka means a harmful thought or act, from the sense of a wrong turn of reasoning. Pratipaksha-bhavana means cultivating the opposite side: pratipaksha is the opposing side, bhavana is bringing something into being by dwelling on it. Duhkha is suffering, and ajnana is ignorance, not-knowing. The plain sense: harm, with violence as the first example, comes in nine-fold variety. It can be done by oneself, caused through another, or merely approved. Its root is greed, anger, or delusion. Its strength is mild, middling, or intense. Whatever the kind, its fruit is endless suffering and ignorance. So one dwells on the opposite. Patanjali says this because 2.33 gave the remedy without the reason. Here he gives the reason: even a faint or secondhand wrong has a result, and the result is pain and darkened understanding. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the sutra as a chart of how harm can be classified, so that the practitioner can recognise it in every form, and he takes the reflection to be that these acts yield suffering and ignorance without end. Later commentators mostly follow him in the detail.
A small crack in a windscreen looks harmless, whether you made it, let a friend drive on it, or only shrugged at it. Yet it spreads with every bump on the road. Each wrong, however slight or secondhand, spreads the same way into the sufferer's mind.
1. Tonight, recall one small unkind act from today: a sharp word, a white lie, or a nod at someone's gossip. 2. Ask which of the three it was: done by you, caused through someone else, or merely approved by your silence. 3. Name the root behind it: greed, anger, or confusion. 4. Write one sentence on what it cost you afterward, in mood or clarity. Then name the opposite thought, and let it rest there for a minute.
