I bow to him, best of men, who woke to the nature of things through knowing wide as space, a knowing no different from what is known, and who saw all things as like the sky. I bow also to the teaching named non-touching, as it was taught: good for all beings, a source of happiness to all, free of quarrel and free of opposition.

Gaudapada opens the fourth chapter with a bow, and the bow carries the chapter's whole argument. Three words do most of the work. Dharma, from the root dhr, to hold, means the things that make up experience: states, objects, appearances. Asparsha means non-touching: a, not, and sparsha, touch. Avivada means without dispute: vi-vad, to speak against. The first verse bows to the one who knew all dharmas as like the sky. Sky has birds and clouds crossing it and keeps no mark of any. His knowing is wide as space and not separate from what it knows. The second verse bows to the teaching itself, called non-touching because, in Gaudapada's account, the real is never stained or divided by the things that appear. He calls it good for all beings, and free of quarrel and opposition. Teachings of that day, Buddhist ones included, also compared things to sky and dream, and the commentators read this as Gaudapada's own non-dual view. It is placed here because this chapter takes up the schools' disputes over birth and cause. Gaudapada first names a truth that opposes nobody. The text asks the listener to read what follows as a seeing, and not as a contest to be won.

Picture a wide sky over a railway platform. Trains, birds, smoke and rain pass through it all day, and at evening it is exactly as open as at dawn. Nothing it holds sticks to it. That is the knowing the bow describes: it takes in every thing and is marked by none, so nothing is left to argue over.

1. Tonight, look at the sky for two minutes. Notice a cloud, a bird or a light crossing it, and notice that the sky stays unmarked. 2. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself about to argue a point, pause for one breath before answering. 3. Ask yourself whether you want to be right or to see clearly, and speak after that. 4. Once this week, hear someone out to the end without preparing your reply.

A grandmother sits at the table while her two sons argue about who looks after the family land. Each has a real grievance. Each is already rehearsing his next sentence. She is tired, and she feels herself taking a side. The teaching asks her to do one thing: let the words pass through her as clouds pass through the sky. She hears the claim without having to join it. In that gap she can ask what each son is afraid of losing. Ordinary experience bears this out: people quarrel harder when they feel cornered, and a calm listener often loosens the knot. The text calls its teaching free of quarrel and opposition, and she tries to speak from the same place, saying what she sees and not defending a camp. The verse does not settle the land, mend an old injury or promise that her sons will agree. Where the dispute needs a lawyer, a doctor or time, it still needs them. It offers only a steadier way of standing in the room.
