The story · English
Narada asked Brahma what happened after the goddess Durga vanished and the gods went home. How did Himalaya and Mena practise their austerities, and how was a daughter born to Mena? Brahma bowed to Shankara and began. After the gods had been instructed and had left, the mountain king and Mena took up hard austerity. Day and night the couple thought of Shiva and of Shiva, the goddess, and served them with devoted minds. Mena worshipped the goddess gladly and gave gifts to the brahmins, always to please them.
Beginning in the month of Chaitra, she worshipped Shiva every day for twenty-seven years, wishing for children. On the eighth day she fasted, and on the ninth she made offerings of sweets, rice-flour cakes, milk pudding, perfume and flowers. On the bank of the Ganga, at the Oshadhiprastha, she shaped an image of Uma from clay and honoured it with many gifts. Sometimes she ate nothing, sometimes she kept a vow, sometimes she lived on air, sometimes on water only. Her mind stayed fixed on Shiva, and she spent those years in this way, shining with devotion.
At the end of the twenty-seven years Uma, the mother of the world and beloved of Shankara, was greatly pleased. Out of kindness to Mena she appeared before her, in a circle of light, with a divine body, and spoke smiling. "Great and faithful woman, ask for what is in your mind. I am well pleased with your austerity. Whatever you have prayed for, I will give." Mena saw the goddess in her dark form as Kalika and bowed. "Goddess, I see you before me now. I want to praise you. Be gracious, Kalika." The goddess embraced her with both arms, and great knowledge came to Mena. She praised the Mother as Mahamaya, Chandika, supporter of the world, giver of every wish, the power behind Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva alike.
Again the goddess told her to choose a boon. "You are dear to me as my own life, Mena. Whatever you wish I will surely give. Nothing is beyond my giving." Mena, delighted by those nectar-sweet words, said, "Victory to you, Shiva, Maheshvari. If I am fit for a boon, I ask first for a hundred sons, long-lived, strong and prosperous. After them, one daughter, lovely and virtuous, who will delight both families and be honoured in the three worlds. Be that daughter, Shiva, for the work of the gods. Become Rudra's wife and play your divine game." Smiling, the goddess answered, "You will have a hundred mighty sons, and the first will be the strongest. I will be your daughter, pleased by your devotion, and I will do the gods' work." Then she vanished as Mena watched.
Mena, joyful, felt her hardship fall away. She bowed toward the goddess's direction, cried victory, and went home, and told her husband of the boon. The mountain king rejoiced and praised her devotion to Shiva. In time she conceived and bore a son, Mainaka, who was to be a friend of the ocean. The palace held a great festival, and the couple gave wealth to brahmins and others. Their love for Shiva and Shiva grew. Then they remembered the goddess again, so that she might be born. Chandika, who had given up her body in her father's house, entered the mountain's mind in full, and through him Mena conceived. Mena glowed with the goddess within her, and the gods, led by Vishnu, came and praised the unborn goddess, asking her to appear and complete their task.
When the tenth month came, the sky cleared, winds blew gently, lotuses opened, and the good rejoiced. Drums sounded, flowers fell, and the heavenly singers and dancers celebrated. In the spring month of Madhu, on the ninth day, at midnight, Shiva was born from Mena, as the Ganga comes from the moon, as Lakshmi rose from the sea. She was dark as a blue lotus petal. The gods came and praised her and went home. Mena understood who she was and said, "You appeared before me, Mother. Stay in my thoughts, and take a form like a daughter's." The goddess answered, "I gave you this boon. If you remember me as a daughter or as divine, you will reach me. I will do the gods' work and wed Shambhu." Then she fell silent and, as Mena watched, became a baby girl.
