The story · English
Brahma said to Narada: Then Mena gave birth to the radiant girl, and the newborn cried as any child does. The lamps in the room, lit against the night, paled beside her light. The women of the house heard that sweet crying and came hurrying in, glad. A servant of the women's quarters ran to tell the mountain king that Parvati was born, a birth that would bring joy and serve the work of the gods. The king took his white royal umbrella, went with his priest and the brahmins, and saw his daughter, dark as a blue lotus petal and shining. He was delighted. The whole city rejoiced. Drums sounded, women sang, dancers danced. Himalaya performed the birth rites, gave gifts to the brahmins and money to beggars, and with the sages named her Kali.
He watched Kali again and again with a full heart, though he already had many sons. The goddess Shiva grew in the mountain king's house, as the Ganga swells in the rains, as moonlight grows in autumn. Her kin called her Parvati, a name fitting the family. When she wanted to go and practise austerities, her mother stopped her with the word U-ma, and so she was also called Uma. Her father's eyes could never have enough of her. Just as bees gather most at the mango tree in spring, he was most drawn to her, and she made the mountain pure and honoured. As a child she played with balls and dolls on the Ganga's sandbanks, among her friends. When her lessons began, she learned eagerly, and her knowledge from past births returned to her, as swans return to the Ganga in autumn.
Brahma went on: One day you, Narada, wise in Shiva's ways and sent by Shiva, came to Himalaya's house. The mountain bowed and honoured you, then called his daughter and laid her at your feet. With folded hands he said: You know everything and delight in helping others. Read my daughter's fortune, her good marks and her faults. Whose beloved will she be? You looked at Kali's hand and her whole body, and said: Mena's daughter is like the moon's first sliver, marked with every good sign, a joy to her husband and an honour to her parents. But there is one strange line on her palm. Her husband will be a yogi, naked, without qualities, without desire, without mother or father, without pride, and dressed in inauspicious ways. Mena and Himalaya grieved, believing it true. Parvati, hearing it, felt a secret gladness, for she knew the signs described Shiva, and her heart turned to his feet.
Himalaya asked: What can I do? Narada answered: Listen. The lines of the hand are Brahma's writing, and they are never false. Such a husband she will have. But there is a remedy. Shiva himself is that bridegroom, who takes such forms in play. In the powerful, faults bring no harm, as sun, fire and Ganga show. So give her to Shiva. He is quick to be pleased, and if she does austerities he will take her. Narada added that she would win Shiva's heart, he would marry no other, and through her he would become half woman and half man. Himalaya objected: Shiva lives apart, in meditation, his mind on Brahman. And long ago he vowed to Sati: I will take no wife but you. How will he take another now that she is dead? Then he fell silent.
Narada said: Do not worry. Your daughter was once Sati, Daksha's daughter and Rudra's beloved. At her father's sacrifice Shiva was shown disrespect. She was filled with anger and gave up her body. Now she is born again in your house as Parvati, and she will be Hara's wife without doubt. Himalaya, with his wife and sons, heard this and his doubt was gone. Kali, hearing it, lowered her face in shyness and smiled. Her father touched her, smelled her head, and held her on his lap. Narada then said: Her seat will one day be on Shiva's lap, where no other eye or thought can reach. Having said this, you rose and went to heaven. The mountain king returned home, glad at heart and rich in every blessing.
