The story · English
Brahma told Narada how Taraka came to be. Kasyapa, son of Marici, had thirteen wives, daughters of Daksha. The eldest, Diti, bore two sons, Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksha. Vishnu killed them, as the man-lion and as the boar. The gods were glad and fearless again, but Diti grieved. She went to Kasyapa for shelter, served him with devotion, and conceived. Indra learned of it, saw his chance, entered her womb, and cut the child again and again with his thunderbolt. Because of her vow the child did not die. By some turn of fate it became seven times seven sons, the Maruts, who became gods, and Indra took them with him to heaven. Diti repented and served her husband once more. Kasyapa told her to practise austerity for ten thousand years. She did, and bore a son named Vajranga.
Vajranga was strong as his name, and on his mother's order he seized Indra by force and punished the gods in many ways. Diti was delighted. Brahma came with Kasyapa and, speaking gently, got the gods set free. Vajranga was a devotee of Shiva, calm and clear of mind. He said, "Indra was wicked and harmed people. Now he has his reward. Let him rule his own kingdom. I did this only on my mother's word. I want no pleasure from any world. Tell me the essence of truth, so I may be always at peace." Brahma answered with the sattvic way, and made a lovely woman, Varangi, and gave her to him. Kasyapa left glad. Vajranga gave up his demon nature and lived without enmity. But Varangi had no such calm in her heart. She served him with desire, and asked for a son who would conquer the three worlds and torment Hari.
Vajranga was shaken. His wife wanted war with the gods, and he did not. He thought, "If I grant her wish, the three worlds and the sages will suffer. If I refuse, I fail her, and that is hell. Either way dharma is lost." He weighed both sides, and by Shiva's will he said, "So be it." Then he performed hard austerity for Brahma for many years, his senses mastered. Brahma came, pleased, and told him to ask. Vajranga bowed, praised him, and asked only for what would help his wife: "Give my mother a son, great in strength, glorious, capable, a treasury of austerity." Brahma said, "So be it," gave it, and went away uneasy, remembering Shiva. Varangi conceived and carried the child for many years. He was born huge, blazing in all ten directions, and at his birth terrible omens appeared.
Meteors fell, the earth shook with its mountains, the rivers and seas churned, and a harsh wind tore up great trees. Jackals and owls howled, dogs wailed, birds fled their nests, cows gave blood instead of milk, and the gods' images wept. Ignorant people thought the world was ending. Kasyapa named the child Taraka, and he grew hard and heavy as a mountain. He asked his mother's leave to practise austerity, meaning to conquer all the gods. In the forest of Madhu he stood arms raised on one foot, gazing at the sun, a hundred years. Then he did a hundred years each on his toe, drinking water, living on air, standing in water, lying on bare ground, in fire, head down, on one palm, hanging from a branch, and drinking smoke. His heat poured from his head and scorched the heavens. The gods went to Brahma for help.
Brahma went to Taraka and said, "Ask. Nothing is beyond you now." Taraka bowed and asked: "Let no man in all your creation match me in strength. And let me die only when a son born of Shiva's seed, as commander, hurls a weapon at me." Brahma gave it and went home. Taraka went to the city of Sonita, where Sukra, the demons' teacher, crowned him king of the three worlds at Brahma's word. He ruled and pressed down gods and creatures alike. Out of fear Indra gave him Airavata, Kubera nine treasures, Varuna white horses, and the sun the horse Uccaihsravas. The seas yielded their jewels, the earth bore grain unploughed, and the sun gave only the heat that would not trouble him. Taraka made himself Indra, drove out the gods, and set demons in their places. The gods, with Indra at their head, came to Brahma, helpless and frightened.
