The story · English
The gods, worn down by the demon Taraka, bowed low before Brahma, lord of creatures, and praised him with deep devotion. Brahma, pleased, welcomed them. He said their places were safe and asked why they had come. They bowed again and spoke. "Lord of the worlds, Taraka is proud of the boon you gave him. He drove us from our homes and took them by force. You know our grief. Take it away quickly, we have come to you for shelter. Wherever we run, we find him there. Agni, Yama, Varuna, Nirriti, Vayu and the other guardians of the directions all serve him now, like men. He has taken every woman and every troop of apsaras. No sacrifice is offered, no ascetic keeps his penance, and no giving goes on in the worlds. His general is Krauncha, a great sinner, who torments the people from the underworld."
The gods said that Taraka had seized all three worlds without mercy. Their weapons had failed, even Vishnu's Sudarshana discus, which went blunt and lay on Taraka's throat like a flower. Brahma answered them in words fit for the hour. "It was my word that made Taraka grow. I cannot be the one to kill him, and a man should not cut down even a poison tree he has raised himself. Shankara could do all you need, but he will not act unprompted. Taraka will ruin himself by his own sin. By my boon, neither I, nor Vishnu, nor Shiva can slay him. Only a son born of Shiva's seed can. Sati, who gave up her body, has been born again from Mena's womb as Parvati. Shiva will surely marry her."
Brahma went on. "Parvati, daughter of the Mountain King, is now in full youth. At her father's word she serves Shiva on the Himalaya, with two friends, while he sits in meditation. But Shiva is lost in his trance, and nothing moves him. Only she can make him let go of his seed. Find a way, soon, that he will desire her." Then Brahma went to Taraka and spoke kindly. "Give up heaven and rule on earth. All that gods need will be there." Taraka left heaven and ruled from the city of Shonita. Brahma vanished, remembering Shiva. The gods went to Indra's home and asked him to carry out Brahma's plan, so that Shiva would come to love Parvati. Then they all went home, glad.
When the gods had gone, Indra, tormented by Taraka, called to mind Kama. At once the god of love arrived, with Spring and his wife Rati, proud and sure of himself. He bowed with folded hands. "What do you need? Why did you call me? Tell me, and I will do it." Indra praised him. "You are my best friend, Kama. A friend is tested in hard times, and this is that test. My grief cannot be cured by anyone but you." Kama smiled. "Why speak so much? A man who talks long in a crisis does little. Still, I will answer. Whoever threatens your seat by harsh penance, I will make him fall. I could make Brahma or Vishnu fall, and even Shiva. My five arrows are flowers, my bow is of flowers, and Spring is my minister."
Pleased, Indra explained. "Taraka, made unbeatable by Brahma's boon, torments everyone. All our weapons failed against him, Varuna's noose broke, and Vishnu's discus went blunt on his throat. Brahma said he can die only by a child born of Shiva's seed. Shiva sits in deep penance on the mountain, and no one has power over him. Parvati is near him with her friends, sent by her father. Make Shiva desire her, Kama. Then all our sorrow ends and your fame will last." Kama's face bloomed. "I will do it, without doubt." He agreed at once, bewildered by Shiva's own maya. With Rati and Spring, glad at heart, he went to the place where the lord of yogis sat in his highest penance.
