Kama Burnt

Shiva Purana 2.3.18 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

Brahma told Narada how it went. Kama went up to the hermitage of Mahesha, proud of himself, and Shiva's own illusion had clouded his mind. He took Madhu, Spring, as his companion, and Spring spread his power in every direction across Oshadhiprastha, the place where Shiva practised austerity. The forests burst into flower. Mango blossoms and the blooms of the ashoka groves opened, sweet-smelling and stirring desire. Water lilies opened with bees crowding them. The koel's call rang out, and the bees hummed on every side. Moonlight lay wide and clear, like a go-between carrying messages for lovers. A soft breeze blew, pleasant to most and cruel to those parted from the ones they love. Even the sages who lived in the forest could hardly bear it. Even things without minds grew restless with longing, and who could describe what living creatures felt. Seeing a spring come out of season, Shiva himself was amazed. Yet he was Hara, who takes sorrow away, and he went on with his terribly hard austerity.

With Spring in full spread, Kama came with Rati beside him. He drew his arrow of mango blossom and stood at Shiva's left, bewildering everyone. Who would not be bewildered at the sight of Kama with Rati? Shringara, the spirit of passion, came too, with his troop, playing at glances and gestures, and entered Hara's presence. Kama stood in the open, near Shiva's mind, but he found no gap anywhere to enter by. Who could approach Shankara sitting in meditation, with a blazing eye in his forehead? Kama stood afraid. Just then Shiva's wife Parvati came with two friends, carrying armfuls of flowers to worship Shiva. Whatever beauty the world praises, she had more of it. She came wearing spring flowers, and the moment she came near, Shankara let go of his meditation and sat still a moment. Kama found his gap. He first shot the arrow of delight at Chandrashekhara beside him.

Parvati bowed to Shiva and worshipped him, then stood before him, and Spring was beside her. She was shy, as women are, and her limbs showed through her clothes. Shiva looked at her and remembered the boon Brahma had given Parvati long ago, and he began to praise her body, delighted. He said: "Is this a face, or the moon? Are these eyes, or lotuses? Are these brows the bows of great Kandarpa? Is the lip a bimba fruit, the nose a parrot's beak, the voice a koel's song? Is the waist an altar? How shall I describe her walk, or her beauty, or the flowers and clothes she wears? Whatever loveliness the creation holds has been gathered here in one place. No woman in the three worlds equals her." He said it again and again, and then, by the force of Brahma's boon, he stopped. When his hand moved toward her clothing, she grew shy and stepped away. Then she looked at him again and again, and smiled.

Seeing her do this, Shambhu was drawn in. He said, "Just seeing her brings great joy. What happiness there would be if I embraced her." He thought a moment, honoured Girija, and then, waking to himself, the great yogi turned back to detachment. He asked himself, "What strange thing is this? Why was I bewildered? I am the Lord, yet Kama has bent me out of shape. If I long for the touch of another's body, what will a small, weak man not do?" So he withdrew his mind and held himself from the couch. Brahma went on, in answer to Narada. Shiva saw that his steadiness had been broken and wondered. "Who has disturbed my mind while I practised this austerity? I praised another man's wife and crossed the limit the Vedas set." Anxious, he looked all around and saw Kama at his left, arrow drawn, proud and foolish, ready to shoot.

Seeing Kama, Shiva was seized at once by a surge of anger. Kama hung in the air, held up his bow with the arrow set, and loosed the weapon no one can turn aside, the one that never misses. It missed Shankara. Against the Supreme Self it was useless, and it died away as the Lord grew furious. Kama's arrow had failed, and he trembled in front of Mrityunjaya. In his fear he called to mind Indra and all the gods. They came and bowed and began to praise Shiva. While they were praising him, a great fire came out of his third eye, in the middle of his forehead, flaming upward like the fire at the world's end. It leapt into the sky, dropped to the ground, and circled round him. It burned Kama to ashes, before the gods could finish crying, "Forgive him, forgive him." Parvati went home pale, with her friends. Rati fainted as if dead.

When Rati came to, she was frantic and wept aloud: "What shall I do, where shall I go? The gods called my husband here and had him destroyed. Ah, my lord, my beloved Smara." She beat her hands and feet on the ground and tore her hair. The creatures of the forest grieved, even the trees. The gods then comforted her. "Take a little of the ash and keep it safe. Do not be afraid. Your husband will be brought back to life. No one gives happiness and no one gives sorrow; everyone eats the fruit of what he has done." Then they went to Shiva and pleaded: "Kama did this for no purpose of his own. Taraka torments us, and we made him do it. Rati is alone and weeping. Console her, Shankara." Shiva was pleased and said, "What my anger did must stand. Kama will be bodiless, Ananga, until Krishna, Rukmini's husband, comes down to earth. In Dvaraka he will father sons, and Rukmini will bear him Pradyumna, who is Kama. Shambara will seize the newborn and throw him into the sea. Thinking him dead, he will go home. Rati, live comfortably in Shambara's city. There you will find your husband. He will kill Shambara in battle, take his wealth, and return with you." The gods asked Shiva to revive Kama quickly. He answered, "I am pleased. In time I will bring him back. He will be one of my ganas and wander freely. Tell this story to no one. Go home. I will end your sorrow." He vanished. The gods went to their own places, and Rati went to the city he had named, waiting for the time Rudra had set.
