Narada asked Brahma where the flame from Shiva's third eye had gone after it burned Kama. Brahma told him. The fire had turned Kama to ash, but it did not die. It blazed on in every direction, wanting to burn whatever was left. A cry went up through the three worlds, among everything that moves and everything that does not. The gods and sages came running to Brahma, folded their hands, bowed low, and told him their trouble. Brahma remembered Shiva, thought the matter through, and went to the place with a humble heart, for the sake of the three worlds. By the strength he had received from Shiva's grace, he held the blazing fire still. Then the fire took the shape of a mare, a fierce flame with a calm, glowing mouth.
Brahma took the mare-fire in hand, by Shiva's will, and went to the ocean. The ocean saw him coming, took a human form, bowed with folded hands, praised him properly, and asked warmly why the Creator had come. Brahma answered: "This is the anger of Mahesha. After it burned Kama, it wanted to burn everything. The gods begged me, and I stopped it. I give it to you, lord of waters. Carry this flame in the shape of a mare until the world is dissolved. When I come and live here, you must let it go. Its food will be your water, always. Guard it carefully, so that it never slips away." The ocean agreed, since no one else could hold such a fire. It entered the sea and drank the water with its flames. The world was at peace again, and the gods and sages were glad.
Narada asked what Parvati did once Kama was ash. Brahma said that when the fire left Shiva's eye there was a great, strange sound that filled the sky. Parvati heard it and saw that Kama had burned. Frightened, she ran home with her two friends. Himavan and his household were astonished at the sound, and he remembered that his daughter was away. He found her trembling and in tears, grieving for Shambhu. He wiped her eyes and said, "Do not be afraid, Shiva. Do not cry." He lifted her into his lap and carried her home, comforting her. But she found no rest anywhere. She felt as if she had been born again. She cursed her beauty, saying, "I am ruined." Eating, sleeping, bathing, walking, she took no joy, and only whispered, "Shiva, Shiva."
Her father, her mother Mena, and her brothers, Mainaka and the rest, all tried to comfort her, and still she could not forget Hara. Then Narada came to Himavan's mountain, as he pleased. Himavan honored him, asked after his welfare, and told him all of it: his daughter's service to Hara and the burning of Kama. Narada told him to worship Shiva, rose, and went quietly to Kali. He said: "Listen. You tried to serve Mahadeva without penance, in pride, and so it failed. He is a great yogi. Do penance for a long time, and Rudra will take you as his second wife. You will never take another husband." Kali sighed and asked him for a mantra, for no work succeeds without a guru. Narada gave her the five-syllable mantra of Shiva, praised its power, and left for heaven.
Parvati took the mantra gladly and decided to do penance. She asked her father, through her friends Jaya and Vijaya, for leave to go to the forest. Himavan agreed and said it would bring honor to his whole family. Then the friends went to her mother. Mena said nothing and was sad. Parvati spoke herself: "Mother, I will go to the penance grove in the morning, to win Maheshvara." Mena said: "Practise at home. The gods are here, and every holy place. Your body is soft and penance is hard. Women do not go to the forest for such things." Because of this refusal, Parvati was called Soma. Finally Mena gave her leave. Parvati bowed to her parents, put on bark, a belt of munja grass, and a deerskin, and went to Gangavatarana, where Shiva had burned Kama.
The slope was empty of Hara. Parvati stood where he had once done terrible penance, cried "Ha Hara," and wept. After a while she steadied herself and began her vow at the holy Sringitirtha, since called Gaurisikhara. She planted trees there and watered them with her friends. In summer she sat in the middle of a fire blazing all around her, with the sun above. In the rains she sat on bare rock, drenched. In winter she stood in cold water. She ate fruit first, then leaves, then nothing, and so the gods named her Aparna. She stood on one foot, repeating the five-syllable mantra. Three thousand years passed. Then she thought: "Does Mahadeva not know I am here? If I am devoted, let Shankara be pleased." People came to see her and praised her. Lions and cows, cats and mice, forgot their enmity there.
Himavan came with his wife, his son, and his ministers. "Rest, Parvati," he said. "Rudra is detached and does not appear. You are delicate and will waste away. Why want the one who burned Kama? He is far, like the moon in the sky." Mena, Sahya, Meru, Mandara, and Mainaka said the same. Parvati smiled and answered: "I told you before. Go home, all of you. I will bring Shiva here by penance alone." They left. She tried harder, and the worlds grew hot. The gods, scorched, found no cause. They went to Brahma on Sumeru, and Brahma, understanding, took them to Vishnu in the sea of milk. "Save us," he said. Vishnu replied: "I know. Parvati's penance causes this. I will go to Shiva with you." The gods feared Shiva's anger, and Vishnu promised he would not burn them.
They went first to see Parvati's penance, and her radiance overwhelmed them. They bowed and praised her. Then they went to where Shiva sat, but kept back and watched from a distance. Narada went ahead, found Shiva calm, and brought the gods. Vishnu, Brahma, and the rest found him seated on his yogic seat, among his attendants, in an ascetic's form. They bowed and praised him: "Salutations to Rudra, destroyer of Love, three-eyed Lord. You are father and mother of all. Who but you can end our suffering?" Nandikeshvara, moved to pity, spoke for them: "These gods come only to see you. Their enemies press them hard. Protect them." Shiva slowly opened his eyes and asked why the gods had come. Vishnu answered for them: Taraka was troubling the gods, and only Shiva's son could kill him. He asked Shiva to take Girija's hand.
Shiva was pleased and said: "When I accept Girija, the gods and sages will all begin to feel desire and will fall from their path. She will bring Kama back to life by marriage. I burned him for your purpose, as Brahma asked. Desire leads to anger, anger to delusion, and delusion ruins penance. Give up desire and anger." Then he sat silent in meditation, on the pure, unchanging self. The gods asked Nandi what to do. He said: "Shiva is ruled by devotion. If you want him to marry, praise him with deep humility." They praised him and wept aloud. Shiva came out of meditation, looked kindly on them, and asked again why they had come. Vishnu said: "You know already. Taraka's boon means he dies only by your son. Keep the promise you made to Rati."
Shiva laughed and answered: "Marriage is a heavy chain, and attachment to women binds hardest. Sensual pleasures are like poison. I know all this. Still, I am ruled by my devotees, and I have always done hard things for them. I drank poison for the gods. I was the one who caused Gautama's distress, and I cursed those who tormented him. I became Grihapati for the sage Vishvanara. Whenever my devotees are in danger, I come at once. I know your suffering from Taraka, and I will end it. I have no wish to wander through pleasures, but I will marry Girija, so that a son may be born. Go home without fear, all of you. I will do what you need." He fell silent and entered samadhi. Vishnu and the gods went back to their homes.
