The story · English

Narada asked Brahma what happened after the gods and sages had gone home, and what Shiva did, having come to grant a boon. Brahma told him. When Brahma, Vishnu and the others had returned to their own places, Shiva sat in deep meditation, to test Parvati's austerities. He turned his mind inward and dwelt on the Self beyond all things, the Lord whose path no one can know. Meanwhile Parvati, daughter of the mountain, kept up her severe penance. Even Rudra was astonished at it. Though he is ruled by his devotees, he stirred from his trance, and he called to mind the seven sages, Vasishtha and the others. At the thought alone they arrived, glad-faced, praising him, hands joined, necks bowed, and said in shaking voices: "Lord of lords, ocean of mercy, we are blessed that you remember us. Command us, and treat us as your servants."

Smiling, his eyes opening like lotuses, Shiva answered them. "Dear sages, listen. You are wise and you wish me well. Parvati, the mountain's daughter, is doing penance now on the peak called Gauri Shikhara, attended by her friends. She wants me as her husband, and she has given up every other desire. Go to her on my order and test how firm she is. Speak to her with deceit, in every way. Do not doubt this command." The sages went quickly to where she shone, the mother of the world, like penance itself taking form. They bowed to her in their hearts and said: "Daughter of the mountain, why do you practise this penance? Which god do you want, and what do you hope to gain? Tell us."

Parvati answered truthfully, though it was something deeply hidden. "Sages, hear me. You will laugh at what I say, and I am embarrassed to say it. My mind is stubborn and will not obey me. It wants to build a great wall, very high, on water. I took the divine sage's instruction and I keep this firm penance, so that Rudra will be my husband. My mind is a bird without wings, flying up into the sky by force. May Shankara, the merciful, fulfil this hope." The sages laughed, honoured her, and spoke falsely. "You have not understood Narada. He is cruel-minded, a liar who breaks the minds of others. Listen to what he did. Daksha, Brahma's son, sent ten thousand of his sons to the western lake Narayana to do penance. Narada went there and gave them false teaching, and not one came home."

"Daksha was furious. He fathered a thousand more sons and sent them too. Narada went again, and they also took the path of their brothers and lived as beggars. Hear another case. Chitraketu, the Vidyadhara, was left with an empty house by Narada's teaching. Prahlada too was taught against his father Hiranyakashipu, and Narada brought grief. We live beside him and we know him. Having taken his advice, you are wasting hard penance for nothing. And the man you want is always indifferent, the enemy of Kama, with an unlucky body, shameless, homeless, ugly in dress, with ghosts for company, naked, carrying a trident. He first married Sati, Daksha's daughter, and did not keep that marriage even a few days. He blamed her and left her, and sat happily meditating alone. How could a wife live with him? Come home. Vishnu, lord of Lakshmi, is worthy of you, and we will arrange that marriage."

Parvati smiled and answered the learned sages. "What you say is true by your own knowledge, but my stubbornness does not leave me. I was born of a mountain, and hardness is natural to my body. I will never give up the divine sage's advice. Those who trust their teacher's words find happiness here and hereafter. Whether my house stays empty or not, my stubbornness always pleases me. Vishnu has qualities and plays; Shiva is called without qualities, because he takes forms for his devotees and does not wish to show worldly lordship. I know Shiva truly by my teacher's grace. If he will not marry me, I will remain unmarried, I say it truly. The sun may rise in the west, Meru may move, fire may turn cool, a lotus may bloom on a rock, but my resolve will not change." She bowed and fell silent, remembering Shiva with an untroubled mind. The sages, knowing her firmness, cried "Victory," and blessed her. Gladly they bowed and went to Shiva's place, told him all, received his leave, and returned reverently to their heaven.
