The story · English

The sages had gone back to their own world, and Shankara, the lord who gives joy to all, decided to test Devi's austerity for himself. He was already pleased with her. He took the form of an old, matted-haired Brahmin, blazing with a hidden light, and walked into Parvati's forest carrying a staff and an umbrella. He found her sitting on a raised platform, surrounded by her friends, as clear and gentle as the crescent of the moon. Shiva, dressed as a student of the Vedas, came close to her with affection, for he loves those who love him. Parvati saw the wonderful Brahmin and honored him with every offering. When he was welcomed and at ease, she asked after his health and said, "Who are you, and where have you come from? You light up this forest. Tell me, best of those who know the Vedas."

The Brahmin answered, "I go where I wish. I am old, a Brahmin, a seeker who helps others." Then he turned the question on her. "Who are you, and whose daughter? Why do you practice this harsh austerity alone in a empty forest, one that even sages find hard? You are not a child and not old. You are a beautiful young woman. Why such hard penance without a husband? Are you the companion of some ascetic who has left you for somewhere else? Tell me your family and your father. Such beauty makes this effort wasted. Are you Lakshmi, born of the Vedas, or lovely Sarasvati? I cannot guess." Parvati replied, "I am none of them. I am the daughter of Himalaya, and my name now is Parvati. Before, I was Sati, Daksha's daughter. I gave up that body through yoga because my father insulted my husband."

She went on. "In this birth, by fate, Shiva came to me again. But he left me, and he burned Kama to ash before he went. When Shankara departed, grief burned me and I left my father's house. I came to the bank of the Ganga and practiced severe austerity for a long time. I did not win the beloved of my life. Now I will enter the fire. You have watched for a moment. Go. Shiva has not accepted me. Wherever I am born next, I will choose Shiva as my husband." Saying this, Parvati walked into the fire in front of him, while the Brahmin tried again and again to stop her. By the power of her tapas the fire became cool, like a paste of sandalwood.

The Brahmin stayed a moment in the flames, then rose up out of them and asked her, laughing, "Lovely one, have you understood nothing from your tapas? Your body has not burned, and you have not won what you wanted. Tell me the truth. I am a Brahmin and a friend now, and you should not hide your purpose. If your austerity serves another's aim, it is only austerity. You hold a jewel and throw it away for glass. Why have you wasted such beauty and given up fine clothes for hides? Tell me the whole reason, so that I may be glad." Parvati sent her friend to speak for her. Vijaya, dear to her and wise in vows, told the Brahmin: "This is Parvati, daughter of Himalaya. Nobody has married her. She wants no one but Shiva, and she has practiced austerity for three thousand years."

Vijaya continued, "She passes over Indra and the gods, Vishnu and Brahma, and wants the husband who holds the Pinaka bow. Narada advised her, and she bears this terrible penance. Why would her wish not bear fruit?" The Brahmin laughed. "This is your friend's joke. If it is true, let the Devi say it herself." So Parvati spoke. "Hear all of it, Brahmin. What my friend said is true. In mind, word and deed I have chosen Shankara as my husband. I know he is hard to win, yet my heart is eager, and so I practice this tapas." The Brahmin said, "I have wanted to know what you desired. Now I have heard it from your own lips, I will go. Do as you like." Parvati bowed and said, "Why leave? Stay and tell me what is good for me."

He stayed. "If you wish to hear, I will tell you the truth. I know Mahadeva well. He rides a bull, is smeared with ashes, wears matted hair and a tiger skin, and an elephant hide around him. He carries a skull, snakes coil about his limbs, and he is stained with poison. He eats what should not be eaten. His eyes are odd and terrifying, his birth unknown. He has no home, goes naked, and is always among ghosts and spirits. "Remember what I have heard. Sati, Daksha's daughter, chose him, and her father rejected her as the wife of a skull-bearer. He kept Shiva from the sacrifice, and Sati, wild with grief, gave up her life. You are a jewel among women, and your father is king of mountains. Why this penance for such a husband?"

"You pay in gold to take glass. You leave sandalwood to smear on mud. You leave sunlight for a firefly. You want a hide in place of silk, and the forest in place of a home. How do your lotus eyes match his three? Your moon face, his five heads? Your braid, his matted locks? Sandal on your body, ashes from the pyre on his. He rides a bull and owns nothing. He burned your beloved Kama and left you. He has no family and no learning, only ghouls for friends and poison in his throat. Turn your mind from him, or do as you like." Parvati answered in anger. "I knew you were someone else. Shiva is the formless Brahman, the source of the Vedas, whom even Vishnu and Brahma cannot match. Speaking against him is a sin, and so is listening." She told Vijaya, "Stop him," and lifted her foot to leave.

At that moment Shiva himself took her hand, showing his beautiful form. Parvati stood with her face lowered. He said, "Where will you go, leaving me? I will not be left again. I am pleased. Ask a boon, nothing is beyond you. From today I am your servant, bought by your austerity. For one moment of your beauty I am yours for ages. Put aside your shyness. You are my wife for all time. I tested you in many ways. Forgive me, for I follow the ways of the world. I have never seen a lover like you in the three worlds. Come, my love, I will go with you to my home on the best of mountains." Parvati was filled with joy. All the pain of her tapas left her, and her weariness vanished.
