The story · English
The gods had seen how deep and unwavering Himalaya's devotion to Shiva was, and how deep Mena's was too. Indra and the others talked it over. If the mountain gives his daughter to Shiva out of single-minded devotion, they said, he will surely reach liberation. Then the earth would lose the mountain that holds her endless jewels, and her name, Ratnagarbha, the one who carries gems, would become empty. Himalaya would leave his fixed form for a divine one, give the girl to the trident-bearer, go to Shiva's world, and win a form like Mahadeva's. After enjoying fine pleasures there, he would find release. The gods feared this, and they were also struck with wonder. So they went to their teacher Brihaspati and bowed. They said: go to Himalaya's house for our sake, and speak against Shiva. Without Shiva, Durga will take no other husband, and Himalaya will give her unwillingly.
Brihaspati heard them out and put his hands over his ears. He would not accept it, and he kept the name of Shiva on his lips. Then, being a wise man, he remembered Mahadeva and scolded the best of the gods again and again. You are all selfish, he said, and you ruin other people's good. If I slander Shankara, I will surely go to hell. Let one of you go instead. Or if you want, the seven sages will talk to the mountain later. Or go to Brahma's world and tell him everything. The gods went to Brahma and bowed. He listened, and he wept for them. He said: my children, I cannot slander Shiva. It is unbearable, it destroys wealth, and it is the seed of disasters. Go to Kailasa and please Shankara. Let him go to Himalaya's house and speak against himself. Blame of oneself, to cancel blame of another, is held to bring fame.
The gods bowed to Brahma, went quickly to Kailasa, and joined their hands before Shiva. Lord of lords, Mahadeva, source of mercy, they said, we have come to you for shelter. You love your devotees and always do their work, you lift the poor and free the faithful from trouble. They told him the whole matter. Shiva accepted their words. He smiled, comforted them, and sent them on their way. The gods went home glad, praising Sadashiva and sure their task was done. Then Shiva, who loves his devotees and is untouched by change, set out for the mountain king. Himalaya was sitting in his hall among his relatives, with Parvati beside him. Shiva came in the dress of a holy man: staff, umbrella, bright cloth, a shining mark on his brow, a crystal rosary in his hand, a shaligrama stone at his neck, chanting Hari's name.
Himalaya rose with his whole household and bowed to the ground before this guest. Parvati bowed too, and knew in her heart who he was, and praised him in great joy. The brahmin blessed them all, and his heart was gladdest for Shiva's beloved. He accepted the honey-offering and the other courtesies. Himalaya asked after his welfare, honored him fully, and asked who he was. The brahmin replied: I am a Vaishnava brahmin, wise and kind, and I wander the earth living on small alms. I go where the mind goes, and through my teacher's power I know all things. I have learned that you mean to give your daughter, lovely as a lotus, to Shiva. Then he named Shiva's faults. He called him homeless, ugly, naked, a dweller in burning grounds, snake-wearing, ash-smeared, of unknown birth and age, matted-haired, a beggar. He said: the match is not right, and people will laugh.
The brahmin went on: you have no kin of his to consult, and he has no wealth. You are a great mine of jewels. Ask Mena, your relatives and sons, and every wise person, but leave Parvati out. A sick man never likes his medicine. He always likes what harms him. Having said this, he ate gladly and went home, calm, the maker of many divine plays. Mena heard what the brahmin had said, and her eyes were dim with grief. She told Himalaya: ask the devotees of Shiva what this Vaishnava said of him. My heart recoils. I will not give my daughter to Rudra, who is ugly and ill-mannered. If you do not listen, I will die, or leave the house, or drink poison, or tie a rope to Ambika's neck and go into the forest, or drown her in the sea. She went to the anger-room, flung off her necklace, wept, and lay on the floor.
Meanwhile Shiva, restless with longing, remembered the seven sages. They came at once like wishing-trees, and Arundhati came with them. Seeing them shine like the sun, Shiva left his meditation. They bowed and praised him, and thought themselves fulfilled. They said: whatever penance, study, fire-offerings or pilgrimage we ever did has borne fruit today, because you remembered us. Command us. Shiva took on worldly manner and answered: you are always to be honored. I called you for a purpose. The gods suffer from the wicked Taraka, who has a boon from Brahma. I mean to marry Parvati, who has done hard penance. I went to her father's house as a beggar and, urged by the gods, slandered myself as a Vaishnava, to break their devotion. They were upset, and now refuse. Go to Himalaya and Mena and persuade them. The sages were overjoyed and flew toward Himalaya's city.
The sages gazed at Himalaya's city, rich with jeweled houses, gardens and pools, more splendid than Alaka or Amaravati. They said to one another that anyone who has seen it can ask what heaven is for. Himalaya saw seven radiant sages coming through the sky and went out with his hands joined. He bowed, honored them, gave them seats, and told them his life was fulfilled. Please give me some task, he said. They answered: Shiva is called father of the world and Shiva the mother. Give your daughter to great Shankara, and you will become the teacher of the world's teacher. Himalaya bowed. He said that long ago he had accepted this in his heart. But a brahmin had lately spoken against Shiva. Since then Mena has lost her judgment, refuses the marriage, and lies in the anger-room, deaf to advice. I too am confused, and I do not want to give her to a beggar. Then, bewildered by Shiva's play, he fell silent.
The sages praised Shiva's power of illusion and sent Arundhati to Mena. She found Mena lying overcome with grief and said gently: get up, Menaka. I am Arundhati, and the seven kindly sages have come to your house. Mena rose at once and bowed. What good fortune is this, she said, that Vasishtha's wife has come to my home. I am like your servant, and so is my daughter. Tell me why you came. Arundhati spoke at length and calmed her, then returned to the sages. They turned to Himalaya, remembering Shiva's feet, and said: give Parvati to Shiva and be father-in-law to the destroyer. Shiva has no wish to marry. But Brahma begged him, for Taraka's end, and your daughter's penance and vow are the second reason. Himalaya smiled, but was afraid. He said: I see no royal goods, no kin, no home. A father who gives a daughter to an unfit groom out of desire, delusion, fear or greed goes to hell. I will not willingly give her. Do what is fitting.
Vasishtha, the most skilled speaker among them, answered. Hear words that serve you and agree with right, Himalaya. Speech is of three kinds. One is untrue and harmful afterward but pleasant to hear, and a hidden enemy speaks it. One is unwelcome at first but brings happiness in the end, and a kind relative speaks it. One is sweet as nectar to hear, true and helpful always, and that is best. Which do you want? Shankara, lord of the gods, lacks worldly riches because his mind is sunk in the ocean of knowledge. A father who gives his daughter to a suffering man harms her, but who can say Shiva suffers when Kubera serves him? With a frown he can create or destroy the world. He is beyond qualities. His three forms are Brahma, Vishnu and Hara. Shiva's own power takes forms too. She was Sati, Daksha's daughter. Hearing her husband slandered, she gave up her body, and now she is born to you and Mena.
Vasishtha continued: she is Shiva's wife in every birth, and in every age she is born again as the mother of the wise. Hara himself wears the bones and pyre-ashes of Sati out of devotion. So give your daughter to Hara willingly. Otherwise she will go to her beloved herself. Seeing her great suffering, the Lord, having made his promise, came in a brahmin's form to her place of penance, comforted her, gave her a boon, and went home. At her request Shambhu asked you for her. You and Mena agreed, devoted to Shiva. Tell me why your mind has turned the other way. The Lord, asked by her, sent us quickly, with Arundhati, to teach you. If you give Parvati to Rudra, great joy will come to you. If you do not give her willingly, the marriage will happen anyway, by the force of what must be. The word of the Lord is never overturned. Indra once cut the wings of the mountains in play.
