The story · English
Narada asked Brahma what Shiva did when the letter of wedding blessings reached him. Shiva took it gladly and laughed with delight, and he showed honour to those who had brought it. He had the letter read out and accepted it according to the proper rule. He received the bearers with great respect and sent them on their way. Then he spoke to the sages. "The work has been done well and it is auspicious. You must come to my wedding. I have accepted this marriage." The sages heard him, bowed, walked around him, and went home, telling everyone of their good fortune. Soon after, Narada came quickly to Shiva, in the manner of ordinary people. He bowed with folded hands, called out victory to him again and again, and asked what he should do.
Shiva spoke kindly to Narada. "Listen, best of sages. You are dear to me. Parvati did great austerities on your instruction. I was pleased and gave her the boon that I would be her husband. I am bound by her devotion, so I will marry her. The seven sages have fixed the moment. It will come on the seventh day from today, and I will hold a great festival." Narada answered that Shiva was ruled by his devotees, and asked for some task fit for a servant. Shiva said: "Invite Vishnu and the gods, the sages, the siddhas, and everyone else, with their wives and sons, in my name. Any who do not come to my wedding, I will not count as my own."
Narada went quickly from house to house and invited them all, then came back and waited near Shiva. Shiva waited too, eager, while his ganas danced for joy in every direction. Vishnu arrived at Kailasa with his wife and his company, bowed to Shiva with devotion, and took a place. Brahma came with his own ganas. Indra and the guardians of the directions came adorned, with their wives. Sages, nagas, siddhas and lesser gods all came, invited. Shiva welcomed each group in turn and honoured them. A great festival began on Kailasa, and the women of heaven danced as was fitting. Vishnu and the gods who had gathered then asked that the procession be arranged, and the work was done as Shiva's own service.
The seven Mothers dressed Shiva. By his own will, what he usually wore turned into ornament. The moon became his crown and his third eye a mark on his forehead. The two serpents at his ears became earrings set with jewels, and the other serpents on his limbs became fine ornaments. Ash became fragrant paste, and the elephant hide became silk. Even Isvara seemed to gain splendour. Then all the gods and sages called out: "Go, Mahadeva, go and bless Girija, and take us with you." Vishnu advised him to perform the rites by household custom. Shiva agreed, and Brahma oversaw the work. Sages, among them Kashyapa, Vasishtha and Vyasa, made the protective rites and hymns and worshipped the planets. Shiva bowed to the brahmins, and with them and the gods before him he left Kailasa and stood outside the mountain, with music all around.
Shiva called Nandi and all the ganas and told them to come with him to the city of the mountain king, leaving only a few behind. The gana chiefs set out, each with his own host. Shankhakarna came with a crore, Kekaraksha with ten crore, Vikrita with eight, Visakha with four, Parijata with nine. Others followed with crores beyond counting. Virabhadra, Kshetrapala and Bhairava came too. All had a thousand hands and matted crowns, the crescent moon, blue throats and three eyes. They wore rudraksha beads and ash, and shone like crores of suns. Some moved on earth, some in the underworld, some in the sky. Then Chandi, Rudra's sister, came on a corpse as her seat, wearing serpents and carrying a golden pot on her head. Eleven crore fierce Rudra ganas followed her.
Drums, conches and the damaru filled the three worlds with noise. Behind the ganas came the gods and the guardians. Vishnu rode in the middle on Garuda, under a great umbrella, fanned with whisks. Brahma went with the Vedas and scriptures in bodily form, and Indra rode Airavata. Behind them came sakinis, spirits, vetalas, ghosts and flesh-eaters, and Tumburu, Narada, Haha and Huhu with the gandharvas and kinnaras, blowing their instruments. Gayatri, Savitri, Lakshmi and the wives of the gods went along, glad. Shiva rode a bull white as pure crystal, which the Vedas name as dharma itself, and shone amid them all as he went to take Parvati's hand. Brahma told Narada: "This is Shiva's journey. Now hear what happened in Himalaya's city."
