The story · English
Mena, the mother of Parvati, spoke to Narada. "Let me see him first, the husband of Girija. What does he look like, this Shiva, for whom she did such great austerities?" Knowing nothing of what was coming, she went with Narada straight up to the moon-hall, the high room from which the road could be watched. Shiva, seeing that her heart held some pride, decided to play a wonder. He called Vishnu and Brahma and said, "By my order, go to the mountain's gate, each of you separately with your own gods. We will follow after." Vishnu summoned all the gods, and they set out eagerly. Then Shiva made Mena, standing in the upper room, see them as he wished, so that her certainty would be shaken.
First came the gandharvas, handsome and richly dressed, with many vehicles and instruments, bright banners and troops of apsarases. Then Vasu, their lord. Mena was delighted. "This is Shiva," she said. Narada answered, "No. These are Shiva's attendants. This is not the husband of Shiva." She fell to wondering what could be greater than this. Next came the yakshas under Manigriva, twice as splendid. "This is Rudra," she said, and again Narada said no, he is Shiva's servant. So it went. Agni came, then Yama, then Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera and Isana, each with twice the glow of the one before, and each time Mena named him Rudra and Narada said no.
Indra came, king of the gods in heaven, shining with every divine jewel. "Surely this is Shankara," Mena said. "No, that is Sakra, lord of the gods." Then Chandra, then Surya, each looking twice as bright, and each time the same answer. The sages came, Bhrigu and the others, heaps of light with their pupils, and among them Mena saw the lord of speech and took him for Rudra. Then Brahma himself arrived, a pillar of virtue and radiance. "This is the husband of Shiva," she said, and Narada said no. Then Vishnu came, dark as a rain cloud, four-armed, in yellow silk, with eyes like lotuses, riding the king of birds, a thousand loves in his beauty. Mena stared. "This is Shiva himself. There is no doubt."
Narada answered her gently. "This is not the husband of Shiva. This is Keshava, Hari. He is Shiva's dear one, and the officer who carries out his work. Know that the groom is greater than he. I cannot describe his splendor. He alone is lord of the whole universe." Mena was glad to hear it. She thought her daughter blessed, and said again and again, "I am fortunate in Parvati's birth, and the king of mountains is fortunate. If the husband of such gods as these is to be her husband, how can anyone describe her luck?" As she spoke, Rudra arrived, the lord of wonders, with a host of strange companions sent to humble Mena's pride. He showed himself untouched by illusion and unchanged. Narada pointed him out. "Look, lovely lady. This is Shankara himself, for whom Shiva suffered in the forest."
Mena looked at him gladly. Then his army came, huge and strange: ghosts and spirits, some in the shape of whirlwinds, some with twisted mouths, some hideous. Some were bearded and fearsome, lame or eyeless, carrying clubs, nooses, mallets. Some had no mouths and some had many, some no hands and some many, some no eyes and some a multitude, some no ears. Some rode wrong-footed beasts and blew horns, some beat drums. Narada pointed them out with a finger. "These are Hara's servants. Look at them, and then at Hara." Mena shook with terror. In their midst was Shankara on a bull, five-faced, three-eyed, smeared with ash, matted-haired, the moon on his brow, ten-armed, carrying a skull and the Pinaka bow and a trident, clothed in tiger skin and elephant hide. Mena nearly fainted, and Narada said, "This is Shiva."
At those words Mena fell to the ground like a vine struck by wind. "What is this twisted thing I have seen? I was cheated by my own stubbornness." And she was senseless. Her friends tended her with many remedies until slowly she woke. Then, in great anger, she began to cry out. She blamed her own sons, and then her daughter, and then Narada. "Long ago you told me Shiva would choose Shiva. Then you set Himavan to worship. And look at the fruit. You have cheated me completely. What do I do, where do I go, who will take away my grief? My family is ruined. Where are the divine sages? I will tear out their beards. And this woman, the so-called ascetic, came here on her own, a cheat."
Turning to her daughter she spoke bitterly. "What have you done to me? You gave gold and brought home glass. You threw away sandal and smeared yourself with mud. You let a swan fly and caught a crow. You left holy water and drank from a well, left the sun for a firefly, rice for husks, ghee for lamp oil, the lion for a jackal, the knowledge of Brahman for a bad song, sacred ash from the sacrifice for ash from a pyre. You passed over Vishnu and all the great gods and did tapas for Shiva. Shame on your mind, your looks, your teacher, your friends, on us who bore you, and on Narada, and the seven sages." Then she fell senseless again, too grieved and furious even to go to her husband. A great cry rose in the house.
The gods came in turn. Narada urged her, "You never knew his true form. He took this one in play. Give up your anger, faithful wife, and give Shiva to Shiva." Mena said, "Get up and go far away, you wicked man." Indra and the guardians of the quarters told her, "This is Shiva himself. Seeing your daughter's hard tapas, he has given her this sight." She wept and answered, "I will not give my daughter to a fearful mountain-dweller. Why have you all deceived me?" The seven sages, Vasishtha and the rest, said it was a great gain to see Shankara. Mena called their words false. "I will have you killed with weapons before I give her to Shankara. Go far away." Then Himalaya came, deeply troubled. "Why are you in such distress? Shankara is the protector of all, worthy of worship. We agreed to give our daughter. Keep that promise."
Mena answered her husband. "Take her and tie her by the neck and throw her down. Or drown her in the sea without pity. If you give her to a wild Rudra, I will give up my body." Parvati came and said, "Mother, why do you drop dharma? Shiva is the cause of all, the maker and destroyer, unchanging, and gods stand at your door. Give me to him. If you do not, I will choose no other. Can a jackal take the lion's share?" Mena beat her daughter with fists and elbows, and the sages pulled her away. Then she spoke of poison, wells, cutting her daughter in pieces. "He has no mother, father, or relations, no good looks, clothes, home, wealth, learning. What shall I look at, to give him my daughter?"
Brahma came and taught her the truth of Shiva, who creates, maintains and ends the world, takes many forms, plays many games. Mena said, "Why do you make his fine form worthless? Kill her yourself if you want. I will not give her." Sanaka and the siddhas came and told her this was Shiva, and she refused them too. All were amazed. Then Vishnu came and told her that Shiva made Prakriti, then Purusha, then Vishnu and Brahma, and that everything is from him. "Give up your sorrow. Worship Shiva." Her mind softened a little, but her stubbornness remained. "If his body is beautiful, I will give her, otherwise never." Then she fell silent. Narada, sent by Vishnu, went to Shiva and praised him. Shiva took on a handsome form, and Narada returned glad to Mena.
