Shiva went to the house of the mountain Himalaya with a glad heart, full of curiosity. His own attendants went with him, and the gods, and many others. Mena, the mountain's dear wife, rose and went inside her house. She came back to the door with the women of the sages' households, carrying a tray of lamps to welcome the groom. There stood Maheshana, Shankara, the husband of Girija, served by all the gods. He glowed like a golden champa flower. He had one face and three eyes, and a faint smile lit his face. He wore jewels, a garland of jasmine, a shining crown, fine bracelets, and a pair of priceless cloths. His body was scented with sandal and saffron. He looked young, calm, and more beautiful than ten million moons.
Seeing her son-in-law before her, Mena let go of her sorrow. She praised her own fortune, her daughter, the mountain, and her family. She felt that her life was fulfilled, and she rejoiced again and again. She waved the lamps before him with a bright face. Then she remembered what Parvati had once told her of him, and she was amazed. She said to herself that what she now saw was greater than what she had been told. His beauty was beyond words. Mena went back inside, still wondering. The young women said, blessed, blessed is the mountain's daughter. Some girls said they had never seen a groom like this. The gandharvas sang, the apsaras danced, and the musicians played. Himalaya greeted the guests at the door. Shiva then went to the lodging prepared for him.
Meanwhile the women of the mountain's inner rooms brought Durga outside to worship the family goddess. The gods saw her there and did not blink for joy. She was dark like fine collyrium, and her own limbs were her ornaments. Her glance rested on the Three-Eyed One, and she looked at no one else. She had a slight smile, a heavy braid, a dot of musk and a dot of vermilion. She wore a necklace of jewels, bracelets, anklets that chimed, and earrings that lit her cheeks. They bowed to her with devotion, the mother of the world. Shiva looked at her from the corner of his eye, and his fever of longing left him. He forgot everything else, with his eyes fixed on Gauri and the hairs of his body standing up. Kali worshipped the goddess, entered her father's house, and Shiva returned to his place, honored by Himalaya.
Himalaya, glad and eager, had the sacred thread made for Shiva with Vedic mantras. Vishnu and the other gods and sages entered the inner house at his request. They carried out the Vedic rites and the women's customs as they should be, and they adorned Parvati with the ornaments Shiva himself had sent. She was bathed first, then dressed in a new pair of cloths and waved over with lamps by her friends and the brahmins' wives. She wore a wonderful jeweled bodice, a necklace, and pure gold bracelets. She stood there thinking of Shiva in her heart, and she shone. Gifts were given to brahmins and to others, with song and music. The gods bowed to Shiva and went to their places. Then Garga, who knew the stars, spoke to Himalaya: Lord of the mountains, the time has come. Bring Shambhu to your house to take her hand.
Himalaya, glad at heart, sent mountains and brahmins carrying auspicious things to where Maheshvara was. The sound of instruments and Vedic chanting rose. Shiva's attendants, with the gods and sages, stood up at once. They said to each other that the hour of the hand-taking had surely come, and that they would see the wedding of Shiva and Shiva. The mountain's ministers arrived and asked Shiva, Vishnu and the rest to come, since the hour for giving the bride was at hand. The gods cheered. Shiva was delighted, longing for Kali, and kept his strange signs hidden. He bathed, dressed, and was set on the bull's back. The guardians of the worlds attended him. An umbrella shaded him and fans waved over him. Brahma, Vishnu and Indra walked in front. Conches and drums sounded, singers sang, and dancers danced. At the sacrificial hall the mountains lifted him down from the bull.
Himalaya bowed to Shiva and waved lamps before him. He honored the gods and sages, gave water for their feet, and seated them on jeweled thrones in the courtyard. Mena and the women did the lamp rite. The priest performed the honey offering and the other rites, as Brahma urged him. Then Himalaya led Shiva, with Vishnu and Brahma, to the inner altar. There stood Parvati in all her ornaments, slender and radiant. The sages watched for the right moment to give the bride. Garga sat by the water-clock. When the last measure remained he recited the sacred syllable and the blessing, and rice from Parvati's hands fell on Shiva. She worshipped Rudra with curd, rice, kusha grass and water, gazing at the one for whom she had done such hard penance. Shiva worshipped her in return. The women waved lamps over them both.
Garga then urged Himalaya, and Himalaya prepared to give his daughter. Mena sat at his side holding a golden pitcher. He honored the groom with water, cloth, sandal and ornaments, and asked the brahmins to recite the day and date. They did so gladly. Then, prompted by Shiva, Himalaya smiled and said: Shambhu, tell us your family line, your forebears, your clan, your name, your Veda and your branch. Do not let the moment pass. Hearing this, Shiva turned his face away and said nothing. The gods and sages saw him silent. Then Narada, moved by Shiva, played his vina. Himalaya tried to stop him, but Narada would not stop. Told to put the vina down, he answered the mountain: You are foolish and do not understand. You have asked Hara himself for his family line, and that is laughable.
Narada said: Not even Vishnu or Brahma knows his clan, family or name. In one day ten million Brahmas have passed into him. Through Kali's penance you have seen him today. He is formless, beyond qualities, beyond nature, free of change. He has no clan and yet every clan, and he is gracious to his devotees. Parvati's penance has made him your son-in-law. No one has seen the top of his linga form, and Vishnu went to the underworld and came back amazed. Give your daughter to him without hesitation. For his sake, know his clan as sound itself. Shiva is sound, and sound is Shiva, and I played my vina at his urging. Himalaya was content, and Vishnu and the gods said, well said. Meru and the other mountains told Himalaya to give the bride without delay.
Himalaya gave his daughter to Shiva by the rite: I give you this girl, Supreme Lord, to be your wife. Accept her and be gracious. He placed Parvati's hand in Shiva's and felt he had crossed a great ocean of desire. Shiva took her lotus hand with a Vedic mantra and recited a verse, touching the earth, in the way of the world. Shouts of victory rose in sky and earth, the gandharvas sang and the apsaras danced. Himalaya gave jewels, vessels, a hundred thousand cows, a hundred decked horses, a hundred thousand devoted maidservants, ten million elephants and chariots set with gold. He praised Shiva with a hymn, and the sages anointed Parvati's head. Then Shiva seated her on his lap, made the fire offering, and Mainaka, her brother, poured out the parched grain. The couple walked around the fire.
At that moment, bewildered by Shiva's illusion, Brahma glanced at the moon-like toenail on the goddess's foot. Desire seized him and his seed fell. Ashamed, he crushed it under his feet to hide it. Shiva saw this and grew furious, and wished to kill him. A great cry went up and the world trembled. The gods, with Vishnu, praised Shiva: Lord of lords, you are the cause of everything, beyond change, without beginning or end. You are Brahma by passion, Vishnu by goodness and Rudra by darkness, and no word or mind reaches you. Be gracious. Shiva, pleased, gave Brahma freedom from fear. The crushed seed became a multitude of shining sparks, thousands of Valakhilya sages, who came to Brahma calling him father. Narada, moved by Shiva's will, sent them angrily to Mount Gandhamadana, to do penance there. They went, bowing to Shankara. Brahma praised Shiva, and he granted a boon, and all were happy.
