The story · English

Brahma said: At that moment Rati saw that the time was right. She had been waiting, and now she came before Shankara, who is tender to the helpless, and spoke. "You have taken Parvati as your wife, a good fortune very hard to win. Why, then, was my husband, my lord of life, burned to ash for no gain of his own? Give him back to me. Take away this grief that comes of parting. At this wedding everyone is happy. Only I, great lord, am wretched without my husband. Make me a woman with a protector again. Be gracious, Shankara. Make your own word come true."

"Who else in all three worlds, with everything that moves and does not move, could end my sorrow? Knowing that, show mercy. You give joy to all at your own wedding. Let me share in it. If my husband lives, he will be happy with dear Parvati beside him, and there is no doubt of it. You can do everything, for you are the supreme lord. Why say more? Bring my husband back to life, quickly." Brahma said: Having spoken, Rati handed over the ashes of Kama, tied up in a knot of cloth. She wept before Shambhu, crying, "My lord, my lord." Hearing her weep, Sarasvati and the other goddesses all wept with her, and they spoke in great sorrow.

The goddesses said: "You are called the lover of your devotees, the friend of the poor, an ocean of compassion. Bring Kama back to life, and make Rati glad again. We bow to you." Brahma said: Hearing them, Maheshvara was pleased. The lord, an ocean of mercy, quickly turned a kind glance on the ashes. By that glance, which was like nectar, Smara came out of the ashes of the one who carries the trident. He had his own form, dress and marks, beautiful and astonishing, smiling, with his bow and arrows. Seeing her husband alive, Rati bowed to Maheshvara. Fulfilled, she stood with folded hands and praised Shiva again and again for giving her lord back to her.

Hearing the praise of Kama and his wife, Shankara was very pleased, and his heart was soft with pity. Shankara said: "Born of the mind, I am pleased with your praise, you and your wife. Ask a boon, and I will give what you wish." Brahma said: Kama cried aloud for joy. Bowing, hands folded, in a voice thick with feeling, he said: "God of gods, Mahadeva, ocean of mercy, if you are pleased, then make me glad. Forgive the wrong I did you before. Give me deep love for those who are mine, and devotion at your feet." Hearing Smara, the lord laughed and said, "Om, so be it. Kama, I am pleased. Put away your fear, wise one. Go to Vishnu, and stay outside."

Kama bowed his head, walked around the lord, praising him, and went out. He bowed to Hari and the gods and sat near them. They spoke to him kindly and blessed him. Vishnu and the others, remembering Shiva in their hearts, said: "You are fortunate, Smara. Burned, you were shown favor by Shiva. No one else gives pleasure and pain, since each person reaps what he has done." Then shouts of victory and praise rose. Shambhu seated Parvati at his left and fed her sweet food, and she was glad. He took leave of Mena and the mountain and went to the guests' lodging. Gods and sages praised him, "Victory, Shambhu, Maheshvara." Then he gave honor to all. Vishnu and the rest took his leave and went home, delighted.
