A way of life built on worship holds to Brahman as something born. Yet before anything arose, all of it was unborn, and so the one who holds to that way is called pitiable. Therefore I will now speak the teaching that is not poor: the unborn, in sameness. It shows how nothing at all is born, though it seems to be born on every side.

Three words carry this. Upasana means worship or meditation on a form, from upa-as, to sit near. Ajati means not-born, from a, not, and jan, to be born. Akarpanya means without poverty. Its opposite, kripana, is the pitiable one, the person holding too little in a closed fist. Gaudapada says the way of life that rests on worship works as if Brahman were born, taking shape as a creator, a god, a world to be approached. But before anything came to be, everything was unborn. So whoever stops at that way is called kripana. Gaudapada means this about the limit of the view, not as scorn for the person. The commentators read worship as a real path, one that holds a smaller view of what is true. Then he turns. He will teach the generous teaching, ajati in samata, the unborn in sameness: the one reality is the same everywhere and nothing is ever actually produced from it. What looks like birth, on all sides, is only seeming. This is the question the third chapter answers: if the self is one, how does the many appear? Gaudapada's reply is that it does not appear in the way we think. Nagarjuna, working in his own way, also denied that things truly originate. The verse asks the listener to hear a larger claim before judging it.

Picture a child staring into a pond at a second moon floating below the real one. She may try to scoop it up, build a wall around it, worship it. The pond never made a moon. The teaching of the unborn is the grown-up saying there was only ever one moon.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you think of as having a beginning: an argument, a worry, a habit. 2. Sit for five minutes with it and ask, quietly, what it was before it started. Write down what you actually find. 3. Notice whether the thing felt more solid when you told its story, and less solid when you looked at the gap before it. 4. Tomorrow, say nothing about your result to anyone. Just see if the same thing looks the same.

A woman sits at the kitchen table after another phone call with her sister. They have not spoken warmly in two years, and each can name exactly who started it: a remark about their mother's care, a loan, a wedding guest list. She has told the story so often it feels like a fact of nature. The verse would ask her to look at the story itself. Where was the quarrel before the remark? Before the loan, there were only two women who loved their mother and were tired. She does not need to decide the quarrel is unreal. She can see that the beginning she keeps returning to is one she chose among many, and that her grip on it may be the part she can loosen. Ordinary experience agrees that blame-tracing rarely ends a feud. Still, Gaudapada's claim is larger than family peace: he teaches that nothing is born at all, as his own teaching. It does not mend the two years, bring her mother back to health, or replace a conversation the sisters still have to have.
