Space Inside the Pots

Gaudapada Karika 3.3

Meaning · English

The self is spoken of like space, and the souls are like the spaces inside pots. As pots and other things are formed from their parts, so the souls arise as groups of parts. This is the example given for birth.

Two words carry the verse. Atma is the self, the one reality the text keeps pointing to. Jiva is an individual soul, the one who feels 'I am this person, with this body and this history'. Sanghata means a gathering of parts put together, from sam, together, and han, to bring. Gaudapada says the self is like space, and the souls are like the little spaces inside pots. A pot is made by joining clay, shape and use. Inside it there seems to be a separate bit of space, but that space was never made and is never cut off. Only the pot is made. In the same way, a soul seems to be born when a body and mind are gathered together. What is born is the gathering. The self is not. That is why he calls this the example for birth: it shows how something can seem to be born while nothing in the self is produced. Shankara reads it this way, as an illustration for the unborn self and not a claim that the self is literally a pot. The teaching answers a worry: if the self is one and unborn, why do beings seem many and born? The answer is that the boundaries belong to the container. The listener is asked to look at what a person is made of, and ask which part is the container and which is the space.

A clay pot sits on a kitchen shelf, and the air inside looks like its own small portion. Yet it is the same air as the rest of the room, only fenced by clay. The pot is the body and mind, the air is the self, and the fence is all that seems to divide.

1. Today, when you pick up any cup, jar or pot, stop for a moment and look at the empty part inside it. 2. Tell yourself plainly that the pot has an edge and the space has none. 3. Later, when you catch yourself thinking 'this is just how I am', ask whether that is a pot-wall or the space. 4. Do this once or twice, a few breaths each time.

A woman stands in her kitchen the morning after her father's funeral, holding his tea cup. It is chipped, and she knows how he held it. Part of her feels that he has been made smaller, a thing that has simply stopped. The verse speaks to her this way: the text teaches that what was gathered together as a person, with body, habits and name, is the pot. It teaches that the space the pot held was never born and does not end with the clay. She can hold both at once. The cup was real, the hand that held it was real, and the grief is for the pot-shape she loved. Then she can ask what the text says does not break. Ordinary experience agrees that a person is built from many parts, such as body, memory and habit, and that these change over the years. The limit is plain: the verse does not take the grief away, and it does not say she should feel less. It gives her a way to see what is lost and what the text says is not.
