When the pots and the rest are broken, the pot-spaces and the other spaces merge into the one space. In the same way, the living beings merge here into the self. And when one pot-space is joined with dust, smoke and the like, not all pot-spaces are joined with them. In the same way, not all living beings are joined with pleasure and the rest.

Gaudapada keeps the picture of space in pots and adds two points. Three words carry them. Ghatakasha is pot-space: ghata is a pot, akasha is space, the emptiness a pot seems to hold. Jiva is the individual living being, from jiv, to live. Pralina means merged or dissolved, from li, to melt into. Sukha is pleasure or ease, the first of the pairs of experience that touch a person. The first two lines say that when pots break, their spaces were never separate pieces of space. They simply merge, because they were always the one space. So the jivas merge in the self: the self was never divided by being lodged in bodies. The second two lines meet a worry that follows. If all are one self, must one person's pain be everyone's? Gaudapada says no. Dust and smoke in one pot do not enter the others. Pleasure and pain belong to one body and mind, not to all. Shankara reads the passage as guarding exactly this point: oneness of the self does not mean shared suffering. It is taught here to remove two fears together. One is that unity wipes out the person. The other is that unity makes every sorrow collective. It asks the listener to see that what sticks to them is the pot's, not the space's.

A row of flats shares one stairwell of air. Milk boils over and burns in one kitchen, and smoke fills that room and darkens its walls. The next flat stays clear. The smoke belongs to that kitchen, while the air in the building was never divided or blackened. Pleasure and pain are the smoke of one body and mind, and the self is the air.

1. Tonight, when a mood arrives, such as irritation, worry or a glow of pleasure, stop for one minute. 2. Say quietly, "This is smoke in one room." Notice where in the body it sits. 3. Notice whether the people around you carry the same mood. Usually they do not. 4. Then notice what is aware of the mood without being coloured by it. Stay with that for a minute more.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at night while her son's fever is being treated. Other families doze on the benches around her. Her fear fills everything, as if the whole building were tense. The verse speaks to her in small steps. First she can see that the dread is hers, in her chest and her jaw, not in the room. Then she can see the fear as something that arrived and has edges, so she can still ask the nurse a clear question and drink some water. Ordinary experience bears this out: a worry feels like the whole world while it lasts, yet the person on the next bench is thinking of something else. The text teaches that the one who watches the fear is not marked by it, as space is not marked by smoke. The verse does not take the fear away, does not make the fever lighter, and does not stand in for the doctor, whose work comes first.
