Names, shapes and functions differ from one jar to the next. In the sky itself there is no difference, and the same holds for living beings. The jar's sky is not a change in the sky, and it is not a piece of it. In the same way the living being is never a change in the Self, and never a part of it.
Gaudapada uses four words. Akasha is the open room that lets everything have a place. Jiva is the living individual, from the root jiv, to live. Vikara is a change, as milk changes into curd. Avayava is a part, as a branch is part of a tree. The first half says that names (the jar's label), forms (its shape) and works (it carries water) belong to the jars. Each jar differs. The sky it holds does not. Gaudapada then says the same about jivas: their names, bodies and jobs vary, and the Self does not vary with them. The second half answers a worry. Someone may think the jiva is either a changed version of the Self or a broken-off piece. Gaudapada denies both. Sky cannot be cut, and it does not turn into something else when a jar encloses it. So the jiva is neither a product nor a fragment of the Self. This is taught to settle how many selves there are. If the individual were a part, the Self would be divisible and could be harmed. Shankara reads the whole comparison as showing that the Self stays whole while appearing as many. The commentators also stress that a comparison only goes so far, and this one is used for the points of change and division. The verse leaves the listener holding one question: what in me is a label, and what is the room the label sits in?
A wall has windows of many shapes: square, round, arched. The sky seen through each takes that shape, but no frame has ever cut the sky. The windows are bodies, names and jobs. The sky is the Self, whole behind every one.
1. Tonight, write down five labels you answer to: a name, a job, a relation, a habit, a title. 2. Read them slowly. After each, ask quietly whether it was the same when you were seven years old. 3. Notice whatever was present at seven and is present now: the plain awareness of being here. Stay with that for two minutes. 4. Tomorrow, when someone uses one of your labels, notice it is one window among many.
A man hands in his work badge on the last day before retirement. For thirty years the badge said who he was: his name, his department, his title. He stands at the gate feeling lighter and strangely smaller. Visitors still call him by the title. He does not know whether to correct them. The verse speaks to this moment step by step. First it separates the label from the one who wore it. The title, the department and the daily tasks were the shape of one jar, and the text calls them differences of name, form and work. Then it says the shape was never a piece cut from him, and it was never what he was made of. What goes out the gate with him is the same awareness that went in thirty years ago. Ordinary experience agrees that roles fall away and a person still stands there, thinking and remembering. The text does not promise that the loss of a role will feel painless, or that missing the work, the company and the routine is a mistake. It does not replace a doctor or counsellor if low mood settles in after the change.
