Parasara was telling Maitreya about the way people ought to live. He said that long ago the glorious Aurva had taught these customs to King Sagara, and that he had now described every observance no one should break. Maitreya answered, "Venerable sir, I know the people called Sanda, Apabidha and Udakee. But who is called Nagna, the naked one? What does a person do to earn that name?" Parasara said, "The Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas are the threefold covering of all the castes. Whoever throws that covering off is called naked, an apostate. The three Vedas are people's clothing, and when they neglect them they are left bare." Then he said he would tell what his grandfather Vasishtha once told the noble Bhishma.

Long ago the gods and the demons fought a battle that lasted a divine year. The demons were led by Hrada, and they defeated the gods. The beaten gods fled to the northern shore of the milky ocean. There they took up devout practices and prayed to Vishnu. "May glorious Vishnu, who has no beginning and is lord of all beings, be pleased with the words we offer. Who can sing the glory of the one from whom all beings come and in whom they end? Your true greatness is beyond words, yet we praise you, because our enemies have beaten us. You are earth, water, fire, air and ether, mind, Prakriti and Purusha. Your form, seen or unseen, fills everything, from Brahma down to a blade of grass."

The gods went on praising him. "Salutation to you, who are Brahma, born from the lotus of your navel to make the world. Salutation to you, who are Indra, the sun, Rudra, the Vasus, fire and the winds, and even ourselves. Salutation to you, Govinda, who are also the demons, born of arrogance and lack of discernment. You are the Yakshas, whose minds know nothing of true knowledge and who are charmed by sounds. You, foremost of Purushas, are the night-rangers, born of darkness, fierce, deceitful and cruel. Salutation to you, Janarddana, who are the virtue that rewards good deeds in heaven. You are the saints of accomplished piety, always content. You are the serpents too, double-tongued, cruel, never satisfied, and rich beyond measure."

"Salutation to you, who are also the Rishis, freed from sin, made of wisdom and peace. Lotus-eyed one, salutation to you, who are Time, devouring every creature without pity at the end of the age. You are Rudra, who dances with joy after devouring gods and men. You are the people who act out of passion, and the animals, sunk in the darkness of perversity. You are the sacrifice, and the spirit that appears in every plant. Salutation to the form of yours that is the cause of causes, beyond this endless universe and like nothing in it. You have no colour, no size, no measure, and you are beyond all qualities. Your essence, purer than the pure, only sages can grasp. Salutation to you, Vasudeva, lord of all, unborn, eternal, the root of everything, and the whole universe in substance."

When they finished, the gods saw Hari, the supreme lord, seated on Garuda, holding the conch, the discus and the mace. They stood before him and said, "Have pity on us, lord. We have come to you for help against the Daityas. Hrada and his demons have broken the commands of Brahma, taken the three worlds, and seized the offerings that belong to us. You are one with all creation and we are part of you, yet we are deluded and see everything as separate. Our enemies keep the duties of their orders, follow the scriptures and perform penances, so we cannot kill them. Teach us how to uproot them." Vishnu sent out from his body an illusory form and gave it to the gods. "This form will lead the Daityas away from the Vedas, and then they will be destroyed. Anyone who defies the Veda perishes by my power. Go without fear. It will walk before you."

Parasara said that the illusory form went to the Daityas and found them at hard penance on the banks of the river Nerbuda. It came to them as a naked mendicant, head shaven, carrying a bunch of peacock feathers. It spoke to them gently. "Lords of the Daitya race, why do you practise these penances? Do you want your reward in this world or the next?" The Asuras said, "Great-minded one, we want our reward in the next world. Do you have something to tell us?" The figure answered, "If you want final release, listen. I will give you a revelation that is the door to final happiness, the secret path, and nothing is higher. Follow it and you will gain heaven or freedom from rebirth. You are strong, and you are worthy of it."

Then the illusory figure led the Daityas away from the Vedas with many arguments that sounded clever. It taught that one thing could be for virtue and for vice, that it could be and not be, could lead to release or not, could be the highest aim or not, could be an effect or not, could be plain or hidden. It taught that it could be the duty of those who go naked and of those who dress richly. By teaching that contradictions are equally true, it drew them from their duties. Because it had said "You are worthy," in the word Arhatha, they were called Arhatas. The Asuras, once taught, taught others, and those taught others again, until all of them had been led away from the Vedas.

Then the figure put on red garments and lined its eyes with collyrium, and spoke again to others of the same family, in sweet and mild words. "Mighty demons, if you want heaven or final rest, stop the sinful killing of animals and hear what I say. The whole universe is made of knowledge. Understand this well, for the wise have said it. The world has no firm ground. It turns forever in the straits of existence, caught in false knowledge and stained by passion." Parasara said that the figure told them, "Know," Budhyadwam, and they answered, "It is known," Budhyate. So those Daityas were led from their own religion. They gave up their duties, persuaded others, and the heresy spread. Many abandoned the practices of the Vedas and Smritis, and in no time the Asuras had dropped the rites of the three Vedas.

Some Asuras spoke ill of the Vedas, and some slandered the gods. Some attacked the Vedic rites and sacrifices, and some abused the Brahmans. They preached, "Rules that call for killing animals are deeply wrong. To say that pouring clarified butter into a fire brings reward is childish. A man who wins godhead through endless ceremonies and then is fed with Indra on the fuel wood of the sacred fire is lower than a beast that eats leaves. If an animal killed in sacrifice goes to heaven, why does the sacrificer not kill his father? If a dead man is satisfied when someone else is fed at a Sraddha, why does food given by his son not reach him when he lives far away? All this rests on personal respect, so neglect it and value my words. Words of authority do not fall from heaven. Only reasonable words should be accepted."

By these and similar arguments the Daityas were led astray, and none of them honoured the authority of the Vedas any longer. Then the gods made careful preparations and went out to fight. A terrible battle began again between gods and demons. This time the demons were beaten and killed by the gods, who had held to the righteous path. Before, the Daityas had been protected by the armour of their own religion. Now they were slain because they had thrown that armour away.
