The story · English

Maitreya came to his teacher Parasara with a request. "You have told me in detail about the creation of the universe, the families of the Patriarchs, the lengths of the Manwantaras and the lines of kings. Now I want to hear about the dissolution, the time of total destruction, and what happens when a Kalpa ends." Parasara said, "Listen, Maitreya, and I will tell you exactly. A month of men is a day and night of the progenitors. A year of men is a day and night of the gods. Two thousand cycles of the four ages make one day and night of Brahma." He named the four ages: Krita, Treta, Dwapara and Kali, twelve thousand years of the gods in all. The first is always Krita, and the last is always Kali. Brahma creates in the Krita, and in the Kali the universe dissolves.

Maitreya asked him to describe the Kali age, in which virtue, the four-footed one, goes wholly extinct. Parasara said, "Hear it, Maitreya. It is the age now drawing near to its completion." People will stop honoring caste, order and sacred law, and the rites of the Sama, Rik and Yayur Vedas. Marriages will no longer follow the rituals. The bond between teacher and student will lapse, the duties of husband and wife will be neglected, and no one will offer oblations to the gods in fire. A rich and powerful man, whatever his family, will claim the right to marry maidens of any tribe. A Brahmana will be called one even if he was never properly initiated. Every text will be counted as scripture, all the gods will be thought alike, and all stages of life will be open to everyone.

Piety itself will shrink. Fasting, austerity and giving will be done as each person likes, and that will be called virtue. The smallest property will make a man proud of his wealth. Women will be proud of their hair, because gold, jewels, diamonds and fine clothes will all be gone, and hair will be the only ornament left to them. Wives will leave husbands who lose their money, and women will treat only the rich as their lords. Whoever gives away great wealth will be called master of men, and noble birth will give no claim to rule. Money will be spent on showy houses. Minds will be taken up with earning, and the earnings spent on selfish pleasure. Men will seek riches even dishonestly. No one will give up the smallest part of his wealth at any cost to himself, even when a friend asks.

Everyone will think himself the equal of a Brahmana. Cows will be honored only for their milk. People will live in constant fear of drought and scarcity and will keep watching the sky. They will live like hermits on leaves, roots and fruit, and some will end their own lives for fear of famine. Deprived of wealth, they will suffer hunger and every other affliction, and they will never know happiness. They will eat without washing, without honoring fire, the gods or guests, and without offering water to their ancestors. Women will be fickle, short, greedy and burdened with many children and little means. Scratching their heads with both hands, they will ignore their husbands and parents. They will be selfish, slovenly, quarrelsome and false, and will attach themselves to dissolute men. Young men will study the Vedas without keeping the rules of a student.

Householders will neither sacrifice nor give as they should. Hermits will live on food taken from villagers, and wandering mendicants will be swayed by friends and companions. Princes will plunder their subjects instead of protecting them, and under the name of customs duty they will rob merchants. In the Kali age, anyone with chariots, elephants and horses will be a king, and anyone weak will be a slave. Vaisyas will leave farming and trade and live by service or by crafts. Sudras will beg, dress as holy mendicants, and follow impure and heretical teachings. Crushed by famine and taxes, men will abandon their homelands and move to places where only coarse grains grow. The path of the Vedas will be wiped out, wrongdoing will flourish, and life will grow shorter.

Children will die in infancy, from the harsh penances scripture demands and from the vices of their rulers. Girls will bear children at five, six or seven, and boys will father them at eight, nine or ten. Men will be old at twelve, and no one will live past twenty. They will have little sense, strength or virtue, and so they will die soon. Parasara told Maitreya how the wise know that Kali is near. Heretics grow in number. The pious who study the Vedas grow few. Those who strive for virtue lose their effort. The Lord of sacrifice is no longer worshipped. Respect for the Vedic teachers fades, and heretical teachers are honored. Men will stop worshipping Vishnu, creator and sovereign of all, and will say, "Of what authority are the Vedas? What are the gods or Brahmanas? Why bother with purifying water?"

As Kali draws near, the clouds will give little rain. The ears of corn will be light, and the grain thin and without sap. Clothes will mostly be made of San fibre. The Sami will be the chief tree, the Sudra the chief caste, millet the common grain, goat's milk the usual milk, and Ushira grass the base of unguents. People will honor their parents-in-law in place of their own parents, and a man's friend will be his brother-in-law, or one whose wife is wanton. They will say, "Who has a father? Who has a mother? Everyone is born according to his deeds." With little sense, they will suffer every sickness of mind, speech and body, and sin daily. Whatever afflicts living beings, vicious, impure and wretched, will be born in the Kali Yuga. When holy study, fire offerings and the gatherings of the gods have stopped, a few people will live at a holy place. There, with the least trouble, they will gather the piety that in the Krita age took the greatest effort.
