Meaning · English

Giver of joy, boons and fearlessness, ocean of beauty, cleanser of every wrong, Great Goddess made visible, pride of the Himalaya, queen of Kashi: Mother Annapurna, whose compassion is our support, give alms.

The singer calls out her names before asking for anything. She gives joy that does not run out. One hand grants wishes and the other says do not be afraid. She washes away every dark wrong. She is the Great Goddess standing in plain view, not hidden somewhere far off. As the mountain's daughter, she brings honor to the Himalaya's family, and she rules the city of Kashi. Then comes the request to the one whose compassion is a support to lean on: alms, the food handed to whoever comes to the door.

Picture a child at the kitchen doorway holding out an empty plate while her mother stands at the stove. She does not explain why she deserves dinner. She just says Ma and holds out the plate. The long string of names works like that held-out plate. It is how the asker comes to the door, not a payment for the food.
