Meaning · English
Adorned with jewels of every kind, robed in gold, pearls swaying on her breast, fragrant with saffron and aloe. Lady of Kashi, merciful Mother Annapurna, give alms.
The hymn stops to look at her. Gems of many colors cover her. Gold cloth is wrapped around her in full splendor. A long string of pearls hangs and moves across her chest. Her skin carries the scent of saffron and aloewood. Then the same request returns. The singer holds out an empty bowl and asks for food. The one asking has nothing. The one asked has everything. Her mercy is pictured as a hand held out, something the singer can grab hold of and lean on.
Think of the lady of the house at a big family wedding, still in her heaviest silk and gold, standing at the kitchen door and filling plates for anyone who walks in. Her finery does not keep the guests away. It shows how much there is in that house, and how much is being handed out.
