Meaning · English
You bring yoga's joy, end foes, keep right living steady; glowing like moon, sun and fire, guarding three worlds, granting riches and austerity's fruit, Mother Annapurna of Kashi, our support through grace, give alms.
This is a list of what she does. She brings the quiet joy that comes when the mind is held still in practice. She ends whatever stands against a person. She keeps people fixed on one thing, doing what is right. Her light moves in waves, like moonlight, sunlight and firelight together. She guards earth, sky and the worlds between. She grants every kind of wealth, and she is why hard discipline bears any fruit at all. Then comes the same plea as before: Mother, you who hold us up by your grace, give alms.
Picture the single well at the centre of an old village. The same rope and bucket bring up water for drinking, for washing clothes, for the fields and for the temple lamp-wicks' bowls. Nobody thinks of these as separate gifts. That is how the hymn sees her: one source, and every good thing in life drawn up from it.
