Meaning · English

Dweller in Kailasa's caves, Uma, Shiva's bride, ever young, who makes scripture's meaning plain, whose seed is Om, who breaks open freedom's door: Mother Annapurna, queen of Kashi, give alms.

Her home here is not a city but the caves of Kailasa, the mountain where Shiva lives. She is named as Uma, as Shiva's wife, and as the young maiden. Then the verse turns to knowing. The sacred texts are hard, and she is the one who makes what they mean something a person can actually grasp. Last comes freedom, pictured as a bolted door, and she smashes the panel open. The asker still ends by holding out a bowl for food.

Think of a mango stone, dry and small in the palm. Nothing about it looks like a tree, yet the trunk, leaves, and every future mango are already folded inside it. Calling Om her seed works the same way: one short sound that holds everything that later grows from her.
