She bears seen and unseen glories, holds the cosmos in her belly, works the play's strings, sparks knowledge's lamp, gladdens Shiva. Merciful Mother Annapurna, Queen of Kashi, give alms.
The names swing from vast to tiny. She carries every glory, the kind we see and the kind we don't. The whole universe is held in her belly. The world's events are a play, and she is the one working its strings, for the joy of it. She is the first small flame of real understanding, a lamp just catching. She also gladdens Shiva, lord of the world, settling his mind. Then comes the plea every verse ends with: merciful mother who feeds, give us alms.
Picture a cook's big brass pot on the fire, rice, water and spices all inside it, cooking together. Nothing in the meal sits outside the pot. That is the picture of her belly holding the universe: everything that exists, seen or not, is inside her keeping, the way the whole meal is inside the pot she feeds from.

वे दृश्य और अदृश्य वैभव धारण करती हैं, ब्रह्मांड को अपने उदर में रखती हैं, लीला की डोरियाँ चलाती हैं, ज्ञान का दीप जलाती हैं, शिव को प्रसन्न करती हैं। दयामयी माँ अन्नपूर्णा, काशी की रानी, भिक्षा दो।
नाम विराट से सूक्ष्म तक झूलते हैं। वे हर वैभव धारण करती हैं, वह भी जो हमें दिखता है और वह भी जो नहीं दिखता। पूरा ब्रह्मांड उनके उदर में समाया है। संसार की घटनाएँ एक लीला हैं, और उसकी डोरियाँ वही चलाती हैं, बस आनंद के लिए। वे सच्चे बोध की पहली नन्ही लौ हैं, एक दीपक जो अभी-अभी जला है। वे जगत के स्वामी शिव को भी प्रसन्न करती हैं, उनके मन को शांत करती हैं। फिर आती है वह विनती जिस पर हर पद समाप्त होता है: दयामयी, अन्न देने वाली माँ, हमें भिक्षा दो।
कल्पना कीजिए, आग पर रसोइए का पीतल का बड़ा पतीला, जिसमें चावल, पानी और मसाले सब एक साथ पक रहे हैं। भोजन का कोई भी अंश पतीले से बाहर नहीं रहता। उनके उदर में ब्रह्मांड के समाए होने का यही चित्र है: जो कुछ भी है, दिखे या न दिखे, सब उनकी देखरेख में है, जैसे पूरा भोजन उसी पतीले में होता है जिससे वे खिलाती हैं।
