Meaning · English

She who forms every letter, first to last, Shiva's beloved, queen of Kashmir and Tripura, three-eyed, world's ruler, Sharva's wife, who breaks heaven's gate and rules Kashi: Mother Annapurna, give alms.

The opening claim is about sound. The alphabet runs from its first letter to its last, and she is the one who makes all of it. Every word anyone has spoken or chanted is built from pieces that come from her. The names that follow tie her to Shiva: his beloved, his partner, three-eyed as he is, and Sharvari, wife of Sharva, another name of Shiva. She is also called queen of Kashmir and Tripureshvari, a name tied to her own tantric form as Tripurasundari, and ruler of the whole world. She forces open the gate of heaven. The refrain closes it: give alms, Mother, you who hold us up out of mercy.

Think of a set of alphabet magnets on a fridge, A to Z. The shopping list, the birthday note, the message saying back at six are all spelled from that one small set. The verse puts her at the source of the alphabet, so even this hymn asking her for food is spelled in letters she made.
