Meaning · English

Ruler of everyone on earth, bringer of victory, mother, ocean of mercy, dark-haired, giver of food every day, who frees directly, always kind, queen of Kashi: give alms, mother Annapurna, you who hold us up with grace.

The titles keep shifting in size. She rules every person on earth, yet she is also simply mother, full of mercy without limit. Her hair is dark, like any woman's, so the queen has a face you could recognize. Then two gifts sit side by side. She gives food every day, without a gap. And she grants release directly, with nothing standing in between. The plain meal and the final freedom come from the same giver. The line closes by asking her for alms.

Picture a mother at the stove with flour on her hands and the house keys hanging from her waist. The woman filling your plate each evening is the same one who can unlock the gate. Daily food and freedom are not handed out at two different counters. One person holds both.
