Meaning · English

Goddess set with wondrous jewels, Daksha's daughter, lovely, whose milk is sweet, lady of good fortune, granting devotees' wishes, always kind, ruler of Kashi: give alms, Mother Annapurna, merciful support.

She is named first by her family: Daksha's daughter, someone with a father and a home. Then comes how she looks, with jewels of every kind and real beauty. Then comes a line that suits a hymn about food: she is sweet-breasted, a common way of praising a goddess's beauty. It calls to mind a mother nursing her child. She does what people hold dear, she holds good fortune, and she gives devotees what they long for. The request at the end stays the same: give alms.

A small child tugging at her mother's sari at mealtime does not list reasons. She says 'Ma' and holds out her hands. The long string of names works the same way. Sweet, lovely, kind and wish-granting are each another way of saying 'Ma', and the closing request for alms is the open hands.
