Meaning · English

Shining like countless moons, suns and fires, lips moonlit, earrings of moon, sun and fire, colored like moon and sun, holding rosary, book, noose and goad: Queen of Kashi, Mother Annapurna, give alms.

The hymn takes the three lights people know, moon, sun and fire, and says she is like millions upon millions of them at once. Then it finds them again on her body: lips lit like the moon, earrings shaped like moon, sun and fire, a color like moon and sun. In her hands are four things: a rosary, a book, a noose, and a goad, the hook used to steer an elephant. After all that brightness, the line ends as before: mother, give alms, you whose mercy holds people up.

Hold a polished brass plate near a lamp and the flame shows up in it again and again, in every curve, until it is hard to say where the light begins. The hymn works the same way. Moon, sun and fire first measure how bright she is, then turn up again in her lips, her earrings, her skin.
