Mother, sea of mercy, shield of the warrior, taker of great fear, joy-giver, world's ruler, who made Daksha wail and cures sickness: Annapurna, Kashi's queen, give alms, our support.
This list is about what she does for people in trouble. She guards the ones whose job is to guard others. She takes away great fear. She is a mother whose mercy is as wide as the sea. She brings joy to everyone, does good at every moment, and heals sickness. She rules the world and holds its wealth. One line stands apart: she made Daksha cry out, the single moment of force in a gentle list. Then the familiar request comes back. Give alms, you who hold us up.
Think of the woman who runs a busy family kitchen. She feeds every child who wanders in, presses a wet cloth to a feverish forehead, and the same woman marches to the gate to send a bully running. Nobody thinks of her as two people. The verse puts healing, comfort and the sharp line about Daksha in one breath for that reason.

माँ, करुणा की सागर, योद्धा की ढाल, बड़े भय को हरने वाली, आनंद देने वाली, जगत की स्वामिनी, दक्ष को रुलाने वाली और रोग मिटाने वाली अन्नपूर्णा, काशी की रानी, भिक्षा दो, हमारा सहारा।
यह सूची इस बारे में है कि वह संकट में पड़े लोगों के लिए क्या करती है। जिनका काम दूसरों की रक्षा करना है, वह उनकी रक्षा करती है। वह बड़े भय को दूर करती है। वह ऐसी माँ है जिसकी करुणा सागर जितनी विशाल है। वह सबको आनंद देती है, हर क्षण भला करती है और रोग दूर करती है। वह जगत पर राज करती है और उसका धन सँभालती है। एक पंक्ति अलग दिखती है: उसने दक्ष को चीखने पर विवश किया, जो इस कोमल सूची में बल का अकेला क्षण है। फिर वही जानी-पहचानी विनती लौट आती है। भिक्षा दो, तुम जो हमें थामे रखती हो।
उस स्त्री के बारे में सोचिए जो भरे-पूरे परिवार की रसोई चलाती है। वह भीतर चले आए हर बच्चे को खाना खिलाती है, तपते माथे पर गीला कपड़ा रखती है, और वही स्त्री तेज़ कदमों से दरवाज़े तक जाकर किसी धौंस जमाने वाले को भगा देती है। कोई उसे दो अलग लोग नहीं समझता। इसी कारण यह श्लोक उपचार, सांत्वना और दक्ष वाली तीखी पंक्ति को एक ही साँस में कहता है।
