Alms for Clear Sight

Annapurna Stotram 11

Meaning · English

Annapurna, always full, beloved of Shankara as his own breath, Parvati, give me alms, so that knowledge and detachment may come to completion.

Annapurna is the one whose hands are full of food, and she is called always full. She is as dear to Shankara as his own breath. The singer stands before her as a beggar and asks for alms, but this time says what the alms are for: knowledge and detachment, seeing clearly and letting go. The begging bowl is held out so that those two may be brought to completion. Last of all, she is called by her family name, Parvati, the mountain's daughter.

A village well that people draw from all day, and by morning the water stands at the same level. No one worries about taking too much. That is what always full means for Annapurna. What she gives does not leave her with less, so asking her for something as large as clear sight is not asking too much.
