A Family Across Three Worlds

माता च पार्वतीदेवी पिता देवो महेश्वरः । बान्धवाः शिवभक्ताश्च स्वदेशो भुवनत्रयम्

Meaning · English

My mother is the goddess Parvati, my father is the god Maheshvara. My kin are all who love Shiva, and my homeland is the three worlds.

The singer has been begging at the goddess's door, and now he says who he belongs to. His mother is Parvati, the same goddess he has been asking for food. His father is Maheshvara, the Great Lord, Shiva. His relatives are not counted by blood. They are whoever is devoted to Shiva. His home country has no border, because it is all three worlds. A beggar with no house turns out to have a family and a home everywhere he goes.

Picture a house where the door stays open, and neighbours, cousins and strangers all eat at one table and call the hosts Mom and Dad. Ask a child of that house who her family is, and she waves at the whole room. The verse draws the circle the same way: two parents at the center, everyone who loves them counted as kin.

मेरी माता देवी पार्वती हैं, मेरे पिता देव महेश्वर हैं। मेरे बंधु वे सब हैं जो शिव से प्रेम करते हैं, और मेरा देश तीनों लोक है।

गायक अब तक देवी के द्वार पर भिक्षा माँगता रहा है, और अब वह बताता है कि वह किसका है। उसकी माता पार्वती हैं, वही देवी जिनसे वह भोजन माँगता रहा है। उसके पिता महेश्वर हैं, महान प्रभु, शिव। उसके संबंधी रक्त से नहीं गिने जाते। वे सब हैं जो शिव के भक्त हैं। उसके देश की कोई सीमा नहीं, क्योंकि वह तीनों लोक है। जिस भिखारी का कोई घर नहीं, उसके पास जहाँ भी वह जाए वहीं परिवार भी निकल आता है और घर भी।

एक ऐसे घर की कल्पना कीजिए जिसका द्वार सदा खुला रहता है, और पड़ोसी, चचेरे-ममेरे भाई-बहन और अजनबी सब एक ही मेज़ पर खाते हैं और घर वालों को माँ और बाबा कहते हैं। उस घर की किसी बच्ची से पूछिए कि उसका परिवार कौन है, तो वह पूरे कमरे की ओर हाथ घुमा देती है। यह श्लोक भी घेरा इसी तरह खींचता है: बीच में माता-पिता, और जो भी उनसे प्रेम करता है वह स्वजन गिना जाता है।
