This same regimen is to be followed in Shishira as well, and all the more so. For then the cold is greater, and so is the dryness born of the time of taking.
Shishira is late winter, the last cold stretch before spring. In India's calendar it falls roughly from mid-January to mid-March. Vagbhata gives it no new rulebook. He says to keep the same winter routine, and to keep it more carefully. He also gives his reason. The cold is now sharper, and a second quality is stronger too: raukshya, dryness or roughness. That dryness comes from adana kala, the 'time of taking.' In this system's picture of the year, this is the half when a strengthening sun draws moisture and strength out of the land and out of living bodies. By late winter that taking has gone on for months, so air, skin and body are at their driest. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that cold and dry are qualities of vata, the moving principle in the body, which is why it watches both closely. So the teaching is simple: the warmth and nourishment of early winter should not be relaxed just because the days are getting longer. A reader far from India can follow the weather where they live, meaning their own coldest and driest weeks, rather than the dates.
1. Before you step outside this morning, add one more warm layer than you think you need, and cover your neck and hands. 2. At lunch and dinner, choose food that is cooked and served warm. Drink warm water or a hot drink instead of something chilled. 3. After your bath tonight, spend three minutes rubbing a little oil you already have at home into your hands, shins and feet. 4. On the first mild afternoon, keep your winter habits going. If your own winter is neither cold nor dry, keep these steps light.
Today's understanding agrees with the core observation. Cold air holds little moisture, and indoor heating dries it further. That is why cracked lips, rough skin and dry, irritated noses and throats are so common in the coldest weeks. Family doctors give advice much like Vagbhata's: dress warmly, moisturise skin after bathing, and take warm fluids. Staying warm matters most for older people, infants and anyone with heart or lung trouble. The idea of the sun 'drawing out' the body's moisture over half the year has no modern counterpart, and vata has no direct equivalent either. Seasonal dryness itself is real and well understood. One caution applies to the older practice: a closed room warmed by burning charcoal, as the text pictures, carries a real risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
